Is there a regular poker game anywhere in Cambridge (texas holdem)?
Are there any poker societies?
Thanks in advance
You'll be able to find the odd game, or have games with your mates. Had an interesting game once, over £1000 on the table, £300 mine, after I'd only put £10, in a game with 10p/20p blinds, we had some of the loosest players ever.
They have regular poker nights at the union, and there are random home games in most colleges, although chances are they won't be official societies, because technically you need a license to gamble.
Always up for some Texas Holdem. Only No limit games though, with money in up front, winner take all. Only way to play in my opinion.
I don't think you know much about poker then. How can you play winner takes all? If you play with 40 players does winner take all? I wouldn't even play winner takes all with 5 players. With 4 I would though.
Also, you obviously haven't played any other forms of poker apart from NL HE

As I've said though no limit tournaments mean the stakes don't get to high and people don't get muscled out just for not being rich. That being said winner takes all isn't best, the best games we play usually have 4-8 people and we split pot between first and second, when it's fixed price (usually £5) no re-buy, or winner takes all, £1 buy in, unlimited re-buy for first 30 or 60 minutes, which starts winner takes all, but soon gets split when down to last 3, via negotiation.

I think he/she might be referring to simple 5/6 player sit-and-goes, which, to be honest, are the most likely way any poker will be conducted at uni, simply because 40-player multi-table tourneys will arouse too much suspicion. In this scenario, winner takes all seems pretty reasonable, though a 70:30 split over the top 2 is usually more fair.

Alright Mr simple, seems you are incapable of taking a concept and expanding upon it. What I meant was that the best games are when everyone buys a set amount of chips (no re-buy) and it is winner take all IF in a small group (4/5 way tourney). Obviously a winner take all 40-way tournament would be retarded. Personally up to 5 people I will play winner takes all, I think it makes for a better game, with less stupid all in action between last two people.
As for other types of poker, I have played Limit, No Limit, Omaha, 5 Card Draw, even a bit of Pineapple when the mood takes me. However, No Limit is much better than limit (people who can't handle no limit, can't handle good poker) and Hold'em is the simplest and most fun between friends. Don't get on my case about not playing much poker, I have only been back from holiday for a week and I have a nice £200 cheque from Paradise Poker, all profit.

Never played this one, never even heard of it, and I thought I knew most forms, how do you play it?
Basically the Same as Texas Holdem but each player is dealt three cards pre-flop. Once the flop has been dealt each player must discard one of their cards before seeing the turn (if they don't fold). Two remaining cards are used to make the best possible hand. Quite fun, if you want a break from the usual, however you will only find relatively high stake games, as it is uncommon, so I don't play it much (not rich enough).
I have here with me a 500 pc poker set. Jointly owned. I'm not big on gambling with money. However, if anyone else wants to, I'll be the dealer. I pwn at dealing cards.

You might be able to get some lower stakes games in Cam, if you introduce mates to it. Sounds good, invilves a bit more thinking.

That's how I'm used to playing. Sign me up also if this list actually exists. If not, enough people have posted on this thread for a decent game, so maybe there could be a TSR members game once we all get to Cambridge.
