I use an exercise bike. Not only does it tone you but your stamina gets a lot better. I hardly ever get out of breath now.

Cross trainer. You can increase the resistance for a harder workout, it uses more of your body, and you can always go outside for a run or go for a bike ride, so you get the best of both worlds.

However, a decent cross trainer is likely to set you back a fair bit of money, which would be better spent on a gym membership so you can use the rowing machine, cross trainer, treadmill, exercise bike and weights for an all round better fitness level.

I have to say: rowing. It is the best for overall fitness, you burn more calories, use more muscles and it will really improve your stamina.

Try doing 1000m every second day for about 4 weeks and then keep building it gradually. I do 5000m every time I go to the gym and I try to do this under 20min. It has really improved my stamina.

Good luck!

I'd say rowing is better than all of the previous 3, but then it wasn't mentioned in the original post.

If you crank up the resistance it can be one of the hardest workouts you ever do.
