A week is the most likely answer, but it may depend on which sort you're talking about.

If you had unprotected sex yesterday, you need to take one morning after pill.

For the daily contraceptive pill, you are protected immediately if you start taking it the first day of your period, and after 7 days any other time in your cycle. You cannot take this pill and be protected retrospectively.

Ah, I answered on the basis that she's already on it and asking about stopping.

So you should keep taking the pill for up to a week to protect you from sex 5 days ago? Thank you for your reply.

A week after the sex, yes.

If you were taking it (including being on the usual week-long break with some pills) for at least a week before the sex, that will prevent ovulation for at least until after all the sperm have died.
