MG ZR or stick with Rover 25?

I love the MG ZR, but with a budget on around 2k I can't afford one. However on autotrader and ebay the cheapest are up about £2800. Should I just stick with getting a Rover 25 for about £1500 or wait and save up for the MG?? Is it worth paying loads more just for the MG badge?

Speak for yourself... Rovers are cool.

Have a look at the 25GTi as a compromise. Lower insurance, but everything else is the same except softer suspension (ZR is hard)

So cool sales were falling so fast? OK Rover 25's are not bad cars but they are damaged goods in the market place, Rover 45's are truely horrible outdated pieces of crap, and the 75 is a nice car for the over 50's.

Sadly on the used market a lot of people can't look past the K series head gasket failure. My uncle bought a ZR brand new for £6000.

Hey, looked at some 25 GTI's on the net and they look good, just a bit worried about insurance! I am 19 with 2 years NCB.
I am also interested in Polo's as well, don't know why but I've seen a few nice ones with decent-ish mileage for under a grand.

The British Racing Green Rover 200 BRM. My first love.

Had my eyes set on this before, wondering if I should still go get this car. Always wanted to drive this for a while.

I don't get what is with the garish orange grill! Just looks like some cheap barry mod gone wrong!

Shut up.

Please, just shut up.

To O/P, how about a Rover 25 with ZR bits and pieces, like a spoiler, skirts and bumpers?

Rover 25's are cheaper insurance, that's all.......

I personally like Rover 200's more (THat's why I got one), and I've just got a ZR spoiler today, which is in body ship getting sprayed at the minute, Yeah!

Go research your British history on cars and then you may get the association with orange.

If you cant stretch to a ZR (and to be honest they only looked really good after the late life facelift which you cant afford) then get a 200Vi, that has some poke, or get a BRM, that even has a differential.

Why not get a rover 216 for around £1000 and just get the mg wheels and tyres and the mg suspension (all for around £200 if you look around) and then it will handle just like a ZR, and will have more power than the 1.4 ZR.

If you care more about what people think of your car then get a ZR, but if you want driving pleasure then the 216 with ZR wheels and suspension is the best option if you're on a budget.

Thanks for your help. I'm still stuck on what to do though - I guess my heart is with the MG. But my bank balance is with a 25!!!

Edit: Just seen some 25's with ZR's bits on them on ebay and they do look nice! Hmmm!

Plus insurance is cheaper!

IMO, a Rover 25 with ZR bits/ ZR looks so nice with no badges on. So it don't matter if you buy a 25, just take the badges off!

MG with no badges; why, for that stealth look? None of them are remotely fast anyway, and the majority of barry boys prefer to stick a '160' badge on the entry model ZR

I prefer ZR over Rover 25 anyday, but insurance is dearer. If I was to really go to a ZR from a 25, I wouldn't do it for anything other than the VVC engine anyway, which of course you won't be able to do because of cost and insurance.

If I were forced to purchase a Rover, it would have to be a model with a lasting legacy, which there are plenty of, but none of todays era. The only possible one from today would be the 75 as my boss was quite impressed.

Yeah, none of them are fast * Cough 1.8 VVC cough *

I even said IMO, that means In my opinion. They look MUCH better.

If she had a 25, there's a Derv model which has a 0 - 60 of 8 seconds something. Pretty good for only 111 BHP. It's low insurance too.

i have a rover 200, the 1.4 16v model.....has 103 bhp and can do 0-60 at just over 10 seconds... quite nippy, lol. but the 25 version with the same engine has only 83 bhp.

hm.....out of a 25 and zr i would go with zr. for engine i would go with vvc....apparently tis a lotus engine. but if u got £3000-4000 i would get a BRM as the interior is really nice.

Sort of...Lotus took the engine and put it in their Elise 111S and Exige and Exige S models, however Lotus tuned it to go in their cars by changing the profile on the cam shafts, fiddling about with the engine maps and computer crap, changing the exhausts and so on. This was only ever applied to Lotus cars however and Rover cars no way have a Lotus engine in them.

Besides...you wouldn't want a Lotus engine anyway, Loads Of Trouble, Usually Serious!

So no, the VVC engine in the Rover is not tuned by Lotus to put in the ZR, but Lotus did tune the engine to put it in their cars.

i personally have a rover 200 and love it i however would buy a zr if i could afford it. my boyfriend has the 1.8 and i really like it as its the mk2 aswell. Back to the origianl point in question if its a mk1 zr/25 u are after imo it doesnt matter which one other than the zr will handle better, if its a mk2, get the zed cos the front end on the mk2 25 is pants.
