Gym addict who's scared of the gym

Well I'm not really scared more like cautious or paranoid...

I'm obsessed with exercise so I joined my gym over a month ago and have only successfully worked out once. The reason being the times I've been or tried to go (once I spent £3.60 and was too shy I ran out and didn't ask for my money back) people have stared as if I'm from another planet. Fair enough 99% of the people are adults, but 16+ are allowed to go so I think they should just let me be! I am 16, male, freakishly smaller (5'4, 100 pounds) than most people, but I can't go there without feeling uncomfortable with all the people there. And yes I know I'm underweight and shouldn't be exercising but that's a whole other story.

What to dooo? :frown:

If you've only worked out once, can you really say you're obsessed with exercise?

I run every morning for 30 minutes, and do 1 hour of basic exercise a night, and want to go to the gym to do more advanced exercise.

Hey, your not freakishly small at all, the average height for girls is 5'3 im 5ft so you would be perfect:p: Anyway I know what you mean a lot of gym's have posers who sometimes stare but maybe you should try to find a quieter one? Or take a mate?

So go. Do you think most of the guys at the gym started going weighing 200lbs and benching 300lbs+?

No, most everybody started off like you, pretty skinny and not in phenomenal shape. I used to be pretty intimidated when I started going to the gym, but to be honest nobody gives a crap about other people, people just go to get on with their workout and don't pay attention to other people.

Just go, and sooner or later you'll be one of the guys whose physique is intimidating to newbies.

I was like that when i first started - but i was overweight and unfit. You just have to keep telling yourself its nothing to do with them. Your there to help yourself; not interact wit them.

goodLife, I'm male. lol.

Mr. God, thanks for your advice, I sometimes do think like that, but when I turn up at the gym I can't relax and get on with it. I have a gym pass for many gyms in the borough, so I may ring one up and ask for the hour when the gym is less busy or summat.

Who cares if we know who you are? Wanting to look and feel healthier is nothing to be ashamed of.

Have you considered taking an MP3 player? It's easier to focus on your own workout if you have some tunes to keep you pumped, and it's easier to ignore the presence of other people if you can't hear what they're doing.

Yea...I know

Just plug yourself into some music and shut yourself off from everyone else there. Just make yourself go and get through it once - it should get easier after that one time cos you know you've done it before.

Agreed. Ignore everyone else. You're there for you, it's your money and your body. F**k the rest of 'em.

Don't worry. I am quite slim, so when I go to the gym I get very intimidated by those bigger guys. However since going gym regularly, I have found that the bigger guys are more likely to respect you (i.e. by helping you work out or by giving you tips) if you are consistant and put a lot of effort into training; as they can see that your out of shape but dedicated.

Keep at it!

An mp3 player is a good idea, as Mr.God says, it lets you focus in on what you're doing.
Otherwise, ignore the intimidating gym guys, they're at every gym more or less. Also, everyone begins somewhere. None of them were ripped in the beginning (if indeed they are now). Just keep going and you'll get bigger and feel more confident.

gym addict, I've heard it all now

you're about as much a gym addict as somebody with claustrophobia reckoning they've got a wardrobe fetish

Reply 16

Unlucky with the anon. thing - but it's not like we know who you are now.

firstly i wouldnt run that much if you wanna put on weight

Dont be woried mate we all have to start somewhere! i started going to my local hardcore juicer gym weighing a measly 140lbs at 6,1" was intimidating but you just gotta do your best and not think about it! Maybe if you can get a training partner that will help

Yeah, I was 144 at 5'10", about 14% bodyfat (best guess), and now I'm 172 at 5'10", about 10% bodyfat. Took me just about a year to effect that change.

Keep plugging away, you'll get there sooner or later. Set yourself little benchmarks to reach where you treat yourself. For example, the first time you bench your own bodyweight, or deadlift 1.5 times your own bodyweight, buy yourself a new pair of decent jeans or something like that. Once you've gained 10 pounds spend 50 quid on DVDs or something.

Don't worry, no one really cares about anyone else in the gym. The bigger guys are whatever are usually far too busy pumping the iron then to worry about what your doing. Another thing you could do is take a friend or friends with you to work out. It doesnt matter if they are experience or not. It will be more fun, if htey are experienced they could give you some good tips and if not then their just as bad as you and you can have a laugh.
