Do highly sexualized music videos change the way you look at women?

After seeing the Jennifer Lopez music video for her song 'Booty' I was not impressed nor was I shocked due to the fact in the culture we live in and growing up I have already been exposed to much more sexual images of women from music to other forms of media.

So perhaps it was normal that the video had very little effect on me, I did personally feel though that the music video did nothing positive for women as a whole for once again it was pushing a sexualized image of women one you see so much you grow tired of also the music was pretty dreadful.

After seeing a girl on Facebook label the video as 'disgusting' it got me wondering what others feel about the video. Do you think videos like this have a negative effect on society and the way we look at women or do you think there is nothing wrong with such videos and that they should have no effect at all?

I am looking for male and female views so feel free to give your view.

They do not change my perception. It is a video made to draw as much attention to the song as possible. Things will be done in it to get this attention.
Sex sells. Deal with it.

No, I do not watch these videos, and have always viewed bodies such as those possessed by Nicki Minaj as unattractive.
People watch porn but it doesn't mean they think they'll be able to get away with not doing their homework if they screw their teacher. The media doesn't reflect real life & most people know this. A music video is just a form of art that can be used however the artist wants it to be used. If the video is sexualised there are always going to be people who say it's "disgusting" but it isn't going to do any real harm.
Yeah but not all women duh you can't put all peeps in the same basket. I will not think lowly of JLo but maybe won't see her as powerful no more. It also depens on how you do it, Beyonce for example is slaying.

I thought it was really sexy. I don't think there's anything wrong with exploiting your attractiveness.

You can say it "does nothing positive for women", but unless that's all you see of women, there's no reason you should view all women as sexualised just because you see a sexy woman. We have successful women in pretty much all areas of life, so why would you ignore them and just focus on music videos, a very small part of the world? Their job isn't to "do positive things for women".

Wo, Nicki Minaj has an almost comically fake look. Jennifer Lopez is a naturally stunning woman. Unless you find womanly curves unattractive?

Does not matter whether I choose to rate JLo's body or not: I think her music is diabolically awful, and so do not subject myself to the torture that is watching her music videos, thus it will not change my perception of women.

Changes the way I view those women, not all women.

Well it does, seeing as your comment was on her body, not her music. I don't listen to her music either, but you've got to appreciate a woman who looks so good in her mid forties and no surgery.
No: not because I don't watch music videos per se, but rather because I don't listen to s**te, and so can generally avoid that type of tawdry nonsense by association.

'Highly sexualized music videos' necessitates us talking about the bodies of the singers AND the effect the music video has on perceptions of other women. I don't watch JLo's music videos, so how I feel about her body aside from that is irrelevant - it has no bearing on the highly edited format of a music video. Besides, I HIGHLY doubt she has had no surgery.

Well for sure I totally thought the video was sexy, no doubt I just found it very cheap especially coming from a singer jennifer lopez's age plus thoughts about the fact that her being a mother were running through my mind and then the fact that the music sucked really did not help the video much.

The reason I said it does nothing positive for women as a whole is that some women are trying to make moves for themselves in other industries and then everytime you see a video like this from a woman like Jennifer Lopez or some sexy magazine pics from women who have a strong position to shape young women's minds you just think she has taken women back a few steps.

I guess the argument can be made that a woman has the right to do what she wishes with her body and that this video is empowering for some women which I totally agree with in the sense that it could be seen as two women taking control of their bodies and doing what they wish although this itself is debatable.

Still at the end of watching that video you are left with nothing but feelings of sexual desire and hey maybe some are right its a music video selling sex it works and these two singers are just working with a formula that works best and perhaps they did not choose to be thought of as role models still the fact is they are.

I guess my biggest problem is not that it's simply highly sexualized its that the target audience or at least who I believe is consuming this media are the young easily manipulated audience anything from 14-18 yr olds.

I guess youngsters watch worse in the home computers I don't think this means that the issue is not worth speaking about though otherwise we our just accepting that this is the way life and that the media has a right to control how children behave I have no doubt young minds are consuming this because I consumed the same sexual music videos.

I think the response to the video speaks for itself and this form of highly sexualized almost pornographic media is being seen as normal now and really its not, parents need to wise up to this. The producers of the video could say hey we are not aiming it at youngsters and it's parents responsibility what there kids watch but seeing that online it did not exactly have an adult filter, I guess people are just happy to let the media destroy all morality in our society because that's were I believe we are heading.

I am sure someone is gonna say hey what's so wrong about seeing a sexy female body? Why should we make youngsters think this image of woman is immoral? To that person I say there is nothing wrong with a highly sexual female body but there is something wrong when it's being fed to a young audience and they are normalizing such images within the mind of a youngster.

Maybe some could think I am going off track with the youngsters perception of women but I think that's highly important because it will effect how these young woman behave and how these young men see them and what they expect of them for already formed adult minds it's no big deal though.

I thank all you early posters for your input into the discussion I did not expect much of a response, so I am pleased you are giving your views. Only thing I am wondering is were is the female view, right now I cannot see one and I just wonder why? I would have though this subject would effect you more and please understand the thread is not about sexy women bashing I am hoping it remains a forum to understand how such videos and imagery effects viewers.

On the subject of sexualized imagery of women I am not sure if any of you have heard of the athlete Laura Trott a British athlete who refused to do lads mags. When I read this a while back I was impressed and highly respect her for that because for me she took control of her body, for me this was a real woman taking responsibility of her body and simply wants to be known for her occupation, which is that of an athlete.

It's not something you really see many high profile women doing maybe it happens a lot but this was the first time I had seen such a story it must not be easy for these famous women to say no to the temptation of money so I commend Laura for that.

But that's your hang ups about age and motherhood, is it strong or weak to let society tell you that you can't do things because of our age/social status?

I don't view all women collectively. Does anyone say Justin Beiber has "taken men back a few steps"? Why do women and minorites bear responsbility for their whole group?

That's just ridiculous, there's nothing immoral about dancing, what is this, Victorian times? There's plenty of immorality to fight, this isn't hurting anyone.

But what is the negative outcome here? A kid sees this video, what negative impact does it have on them? I saw videos like that as a kid, I just found them boring. And obviously I didn't expect girls to act like that, because I interacted with girls and women all the time, so I knew they didn't.

Good for her for doing what she wanted to do, but at the same time if women do want to be in these magazines, good for them too. Some people actually enjoy doing this stuff, and it can go the other way- women who do sexy photoshoots can get a lot of criticism. I have respect for anyone who does what they really want to do, not people who do what I think they should do.

Probably because women and minorities have such little somewhat positive representation in the media not sure if you can say that about Iggy Azalea though being that she is a caucasian female with such a wide amount of representation, it barely affects her maybe I am wrong.

One kid understands it's just a video like me and you another kid it may over sexualize him making him search for and more and more similar images lol I don't know were I am going here perhaps there is nothing to talk about seen as youngsters are already watching xrated content. I am trying to defend something here which has already been lost, this is a futile effort the ship sailed a long time ago.

Perhaps we can at least say just because we went through and it did us no harm does not mean it won't harm another and does not mean another youngster has to see it at all.

By the way I found the bit in Jennifer's video were she is moving in some sort of jelly more then just dancing, very provocative.

They don't make me change the way that I look at women on the whole, but they probably do change my opinion of the particular woman in the music video. In all honesty I find it quite cheap.

It's pretty common for music videos to consist of women showing themselves in little clothing do I'm pretty desensitised to it.

Is that true anymore? There's plenty of powerful female international politicians, like Angela Merkel and Hilary Clinton. And men are most of the murderers, rapists, terrorists, etc, we see. I don't think women look that bad in the media.

It isn't so much that I understood it, I didn't enjoy the music and the images didn't interest me when I was pre pubescent. A kid doesn't see it how you saw it. I watched Friends all the time when I was young, which is innapropriate really, but as I was too young to understand the sex jokes just went over my head. Once you're a teenager you don't need the media to make you interested in sex- that's nature.

That's fine though. Sex isn't bad, there's nothing wrong with being sexy or sexual.

You are such a hypocrite!
You watch a full video on women shaking their butts, than go on a rant about how its "cheap". Thats like me eating a whole meal, than saying its disgusting!
really? you knew darn well what you were getting yourself into! you can tell by the profile photo/default pic it was going to be sexy! there is no surprises! dont sit and act shocked and appauled! your comments are anti women! what hole did u crawl out of ?!?!?! ur slut shaming on skinny jeans in another thread! your insane!
also! your comment on age is disgusting! JLO IS NOT OLD! sick of idiots saying anyone over 18 is old!
So youre saying females who are younger than jlo can do this? thats like me saying runway models can go around braless but women with big natural breasts cant! whats wrong for one should be wrong for all! its wrong and tacky to say that someone is too "old" for "inappropriate" behaviour!just cause ur a mom doesnt mean your life stops! there is a high demand for that! just like there are females who are sexually attracted to married men! you would think a man who is married would be off limits..but apparently not! Adriana lima is a mother...more men would flock to her than any miley cyrus teeny bopper!
I have an issue with you shaping little kid's minds long before I have an issue with Jlo!
The way you view women is horrible! You sound like a disgruntled bitter jilted psycho
