Ladies Sub Fusc "Blouse"

Sorry to post another Sub Fusc thread but, in my defense, it is technically different from all the others

I bought my sub fusc yesterday, skirt is fine, no probs there, but I *hate hate hate* standard blouses, they look rubbish on me. I found this lovely white wrapover shirt in Morgan, which I adore, but my parents (and me to a lesser extent, I suppose), are a bit worried about whether it's suitable. I'm more worried about being fined, but my mum seems to be concerned that there's "no place for a tie". Which is rubbish.

The OED definition of "blouse" is: "A light loose upper garment of linen or cotton, resembling a shirt or smock-frock; properly applied (as an alien term) to the well-known blue blouse of the French workman, but in England sometimes used loosely to designate more or less similar garments." No mention of buttons whatsoever. I'm not worried about looking different from everyone else, but I don't want to be fined! Have a look at the attached photos, any opinions would be appreciated

im not sure about the wrap around thing- if youre not to sure you can always ring the college and ask them. my friend rang pembroke and found out they were dead set on all the 'dark clothing' being black and not navy blue or summat. as far as the collar goes- my blouse/shirt is v neck too so it doesnt button up at the top where the ribbony tie should go.... but i guess you could always safety pin it for the matriculation and undo it when youre frolicking around! hope this helps somewhat

yeah, blouse is v-neck, was thinking of using safety pin- are we allowed?

I'm not sure about the wraparound, by oxford standards it's probably quite a deviation from the standard - ring and ask

I think you're mum's right - you're gonna need a pretty long ribbon to be able to tie that below the neck line - and it's only for about 3 days a year!

Aren't we supposed to be able to do the tie however we want to? I was just going to do the knot up close to my neck.
I'll probably ring and ask my college. To be honest, it was either that or a pinstriped shirt, which I think would be worse as it's not plain white.
Thanks for your help guys , I'll do some rep over the next few days!

What I'd do is ring the college and ask - there are some rather outré skirts worn on Matriculation Day (last year we had puffballs and LOTS of miniskirts...), but everyone I saw was wearing a pretty standad blouse. If you really have your heart set on wearing it (and think you could successfully tie the ribbon!), then just take that shirt AND a "normal" one so that if a member of College staff sees it (before you set off to the Sheldonian) and says it's unsuitable, you can run very quickly upstairs and change.

Love the pose, Jen
I think it looks ok (but then, I didn't get the "guide to academic dress" thing), but I would recommend bringing something spare as well, just in case.
I'm planning on bringing an ordinary blouse with a skirt that ends just above the knee to wear, as well as a man shirt, cummerbund, tailored shorts and fishnet stockings
Apparantly you're not allowed to wear stilleto heels:eek: I think I'll have to pop down to Clarks

I called this lady, and she said wrapover is fine  As long as it's white!

omg no stillettos? is that true??
why would you want to wear stilettos with sub fusc anyway?

I know sacrilege! I have made mother buy me some black suede wedges specially for the occasion.

I don't think you necessarily need go a wedge/clarks shoe extreme by the regs.
I've worn 2.5" or so heels to matric & nineteen, ahem - showing age! exams now without being reprimanded.
Reply 13
I need more than 2.5" to feel comfortable on a formal occasion. And I thought the whole point was that the spike would damage the floor in the sheldonian theatre?

I think I'm going to have to wear flats - I stopped buying leather a couple of months ago and finding nice non-leather heels (especially with the added non-stiletto requirement) will be *impossible.*
Still, going into town to look is hardly a chore

A few nice suede wedges about. Anyway, go in flats. If you are going to be slim you can at least let me beat you on shoes :p:

Suede is still a dead cow. I've got a few pairs of leather shoes left that I can't get rid of cos I'll *never* be able to replace them with non-leather alternatives, but I just bought a gorgeous pair of fake-leather boots and a fake leather bag, so I'm getting there!

If you see me at Matriculation wearing flats then you'll know I failed on my mission (which is likely!)

Do you think we can get away with kitten heels? :frown:

^Yep.

I thought you might say that

Gorgeous and fake-leather do not belong in the same sentence. You could go for the tweedy look that seems to be in at the mo. Or patents.
