Exercise Tips!

Hi, I'm really concerned I'm becoming super-unhealthy and amd putting on weight! My BMI is almost 30.

I'm not overly concerned anout 'being fat' so much as 'being really unhealthy'. I'm planning on cutting out junk food and trying to eat a balanced diet!

What i'm not sure about is how I can exercise. Basically after researching gyms where and near where I live i really can't afford to join one. I'm planing to start swiming regularly as theres a very cheap local pool, but I was wondering if there were any exercises i could do at home to keep me healthy and help me get toned!

I am particularly interested in losing weight around the tummy- is there anything that I should avoid eating (apart from the obvious) to prevent weight gathering here?? And what exercises can help tone it??

I have been doing sit-ups- but I've heard these are actually bad for your back or something (I don't know if this is true) and I'm always unsure og how many i should do in one go.

they're only bad for your back if you don't do them properly. if you pull yourself up with you stomach muscles insted of your neck/back then its fine!

Cheap option is to buy some light weights for ur arms to tone up there, plus u can use them for all kinds of exercises. Try pressups now and then, but generally exercise wise u just need to increase things like running.

Oh yeah, supposedly u shuld cut down on the carbs food. More protein to use to turn fat into muscle (obviously with using weights) and obviously all the healthy stuff.

Try the local park for a run. It's great cardio and will increase your stamina. Start slowly, maybe alternate between running and a slow jog/fast walk for 10 minutes each. As you become more accomplished and fitter, you can build it up to 20 minute blocks. Maybe even set yourself goals eg 1 km today, 2 km tomorrow etc.

General dieting rule, and it works for me, is eat whatever you want in moderation. If you want some chocolate, have it. Just eat half a bar instead of all of it. Or if you want some desert ie ice cream then have one scoop instead of two. Make your portions smaller at meal times. That way, your not depriving yourself and so your likely to stick to it for longer.

All these people mentioning crunches and lifting light weights, this is so pointless whilst the OP is overweight. Do cardio run, cycle, swim, row, play football what ever you enjoy most.

Second that...

Simple rule would be to reduce to a bare minimum of fats and count your calories. If you burn more calories than you intake, you will lose weight. That's not to say that if you eat say 1800 calories, you need to burn that on a treadmill, because your daily activity will count towards the amount you burn

I know it's different for different people but aproximately how many calories do you burn swimming, say, a kilometer??? I generally do around 3/4 breast stroke and 1/4 front crawl when I swim, although if it would help I could do some back stroke as well, or do more of the front crawl?

Also could i just ask if a cardio run is different to a normal run (sorry, ignorant, lol).

Thanks so much to all you ppl so far

Please don't ever give anybody advice in any sort of nutrition thread when you clearly have no idea at all what you're talking about.

Thank you.

"Turn fat into muscle"

Front crawl will burn more calories (think of it like a jog (breast stroke) to a run (crawl))

Walk, take long walks prefarably on an empty stomach, ie in the morning before breakfast.
Crunches and push-ups are good excercises to do at home, and yes swimming is good too.

Invest in a skipping rope or one of those mini trampoline things for one person. They will improve your cardiovascular fitness and you can use them in your garden or in the case of the trampoline, inside your house. As a result, you will lose fat from everywhere. I would advice doing regular cardiovascular exercise. You could possibly take up dancing. As there are many types E.g. tap dancing, street dancing, ballroom or latin (merengue, salsa, tangoetc). The list is endless. Try looking for one that you like the look of and sign up to go there once a week. Dancing is a cardiovascular exercise and will also help to tone up. Good luck.

You use a skipping rope whilst bouncing on a trampolean? oyu must have great coordination :p:

It lovely that your so enthusiastic to help, but your recomending girl sports and personaly i think the OP is a guy, though he does not actualy say so.

cardio means cardiovascular excerise ie. anything that increases your heart rate. just run any old way and it'll be effective. step aerobics is easily done at home, on the stairs if you don't want to fork out for a step, stick on some music and go for it. also little things like getting off the bus a stop earlier can make a difference.

Excuse me! Dancing is great exercise whether male or female. I used to teach tap classes, and over about a year, 4 men came to my classes.

Anyways, I would also recommend dance and/or swimming.
