i think you will be alright. As long as you are actually going to spend most of your time doing things with people (friends) from university. Also i would have thought moving out of your house, to the halls; would also result in more fun. look at it this way, you will have an awesome way to make friends i.e " i live here, i can show you were that is "

I'm doing the exact same as you, and I don't see how it being in your home town would affect your experiences, especially if you're not living at home, it'd just mean you know the town better already so won't get lost. It won't make much of a difference to freshers week either, yours will probably be as equally as fun, unless you live in a dull city, it shouldn't be dull.

whats the problem? you're not staying at home. in fact you'll have a better time than most people and save money as you know where to get the best deals.

On the face of it i would say that this is not something that i would do.

But then i am thinking about my home town which is tiny and i would be likely to encounter my parents around every corner and that would get really annoying.

also, i made a decision similar in that i applied for my degree all over (3 universities in Wales, Leeds, Derby, London) and when it came to chosing which to go to i chose Leeds because at the age of 18 the prospect of moving to Wales or down to London scared me. (i live in Harrogate, 40 minutes or so away from Leeds). I am pleased that i made that decision as even in Leeds i was SO homesick.

It's only now, aged 23 that i feel ready to finally go to university in Wales and i shall a week today for my PhD, but i bet i will be so homesick and feel as though i am a little too far from home. sigh.

going to a uni near my home was something i tried to avoid. I dont want to be "living on my parents doorstep". i wanted the independance of moving to a new town on my own.

if its a good uni though and you're going there because of the course and becuase its the best place for you, then thats cool. you've made the right decision. youlll still have all the fun and meet loads of new people!
