hello. opinions on wadham, hertford, somerville and balliol

Hey everyone. I'd like to apply to a college that's really friendly and relaxed, relatively left wing, with a good bar and lots of involvement with the rest of the uni. Does anyone have any insider information on wadham, hertford, somerville or balliol? What's the best thing about them? I didn't manage to visit most of these when looking round.

Thankyou! xox

Hertford as one of the most atmospheric bars in the uni. It's a cool, underground, entirely student-run place with a wicked drink called a Dark Pango. Oooh, it's electric.

It's a very relaxed and liberal college indeed. We're keen to get people involved in sport, at whatever level, so there's always opportunities to play in a variety of sports. We take part in as many cuppers competitions as we can.

That's all FACT.
From your list, I can see you're trying to find the most left-wing college, which is Wadham by a mile - what other college has a quad called the 'Ho Chi Minh Quad' after all! Bar is good but the bops are better, best in the university (who doesn't want to go to Queer Bop?) and Wadhamites are all over the university scene. Nice mixture of 17th, 18th and 20th century architecture, 24 hour library, no on-site accomodation for 2nd years (although there is a college complex not far away at Merifield). Theres a general refusal to be slave to tradition, resulting in a very liberal, progressive college.

Is that why the phrase "only student-run bar in Oxford" was removed from the description of Balliol's Lindsay Bar? Has hertford always had a student run bar then?

This is most likely a moot point, but Balliol also hosts queer bops (as does one other college, I think) - there's usually one a term. While the Wadham one is usually the biggest/best, the others are quite good too. Allegedly.

I don't know which description you're referring to, but Hertford's bar has been entirely student run for many, many years, certainly before I joined. In fact, it's the only truly student-run college bar in the university. Whilst other colleges may allow students to work in the bar, our JCR bar manager handles everything from employment and wages, to ordering and negotiating with the Governing Body about pricing and rules.

I think you've been told the same lies we have.

Because Balliol has long claimed it has the only truly student run bar in Oxford, and it would also say "a lot of colleges may allow students to work in the bar", but Balliol's elected JCR bar manager handles everything from employment to wages, ordering and set his own pricing and rules according to the JCR.

So there are apparently two such run only student bars in Oxford, both claiming to be the only ones...
