The Student Room Group

downloading at uni

Whats the policy like at university with illegal downloading?
Do people do it? Will they get caught or what?
You can't get caught if you know what you're doing, best way is to encrypt your traffic, use a SOCKS 5 proxy and all the other shizz. This way, the IT won't be able to know what you're actually looking at so they can't really do anything.
It depends on what you made downloading for example a few songs to add to ipod or collection they won't batt an eyelid. It's not like school they don't check the downloads of every student that would be a waste of time, money and resources
Previously people at halls torrented with no issue.
Naturally, unis are going to be on the look out for anyone misusing their internet connection. 'Peer-to-peer' stuff is more highly targetted but leniency appears to vary from uni to uni.
But don't make it obvious I.e download the entire boxset of breaking bad

Yeah, just get someone's Netflix details that you know and have a profile there.
If you are flat sharing rather than having seperate subscriptions for Netflix have one and that way it will cost you less and you just make up a profile

Thank you guys. What about things like streaming from illegal websites to watch tv/film/sport?
