Indeed, i really dont think oxbridge opens as many doors as people think nowadays. Not more than imperial for sure...

Thats quite gd news!

lol ok people, it's quite simple: IC is an excellent place to be, and we're going there, so yay! Don't worry, be happy! Employers are in the know about the quality of IC/Oxbridge, so as long as they know it doesn't matter what "people" think. We'll be fine :p: Now quit arguing before I start slapping people!

Still, it sucks how people haven't heard of your uni when you're abroad (outside Eurasia) - even employers and those reading techy stuff  ... that's when I feel like slapping people :P

*sigh* Is it too much to ask for some acknowledgment, dammit! Even Durham has that!

*feels deep-seated psychological traumas beginning to emerge so quickly decides to hit 'submit'* :p:

lmao breathe! It's annoying, but most of the employers that count, that'll matter to us, will know about IC. You might want to work on those psych issues :p:

All IC have to do is something outrageous (like they did with the security rubbish and clothing) to get noticed in the media. I would suggest some sort of radical admissions change, jumping on the bandwagon of Cambridge relating to a levels being easier.

If i were the rector of IC i would state "To be admitted into IC you must have 2 A Grades from the following set of subjects: Mathematics, Further Mathematics (only countable for certain courses), Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

This would be rather innovative and make some news headlines, suggesting to unaware students applying now that IC is one of the hardest to get into Universities.

I'm sure it wouldnt cost IC that much to introduce their own test after/before the A Levels which would also add to the difficulty of gaining admissions?? Slightly like STEP ie Imperial would mark it.

Hmm, I reckon the 2 A-Level rule would cause a lot of negative publicity for no real gain since it's almost an unwritten rule for most courses (ie most medics will take Bio&Chem, engineers/compsci take Maths&Physics)..

I think the "Oxford-Cambridge-Imperial only" route in UCAS would cause a similar media frenzy but more focused on how IC is now elevating itself...

I think introducing AEAs as part of standard offers and the Imperial STEP would be a good idea tho..

You are such a nonce you really are, so big headed. You seem to have such a high opinion of your self its unbelievable. You think that just because you tough your self at home your better than the rest of us. Why couldn't you do it the first time round, instead of making excuses for your self. All you care about is being at a prestigious university, thats what this post is about, you are gutted that your not good enough to get into an oxbridge uni.
 Woah Marcus, where did that come from? Don't think name-calling is necessary. We're all mature adults ... apparently.

Ditto Caroline.

But thanks for proving our point Marcus... this whole thread's been about changing the opinion of the layman that IC is somehow ranked lower than Oxbridge for the subjects it offers, when in fact in some cases the exact opposite is true.

Although having seen that outburst, I'm having second thoughts as to whether the layman's view is even worth the effort required to warrant changing

What do you think? That they will favour someone with an engineering degree let's say from oxford over someone from Imperial? I can assure you it is the other way around. According to my experience so far in computing, oxbridge graduates loose over ic ones due to their degrees being too theoritical in comparison to a BEng/MEng from IC. And i've heard it happens with medicine as well...As for Engineering in general, well i dont think you should doubt about that. But as i said before, prestigewise, among people in the street, Cambridge and Oxbridge are the only verification you are smart. Imperial is just a university like all the rest
Who cares id its better for medicine? Its all about the name tag isn't it? Universities are branded like sportswear and cambs> oxford> imperial .

Imperial doesnt have any unique character like Cambs or Oxford. Nothing like that, not much of a history either. Perhaps waitng 100 years is a good option or turning the area around imperial into a medieval palace might rab some peoples attention. Or give it a space them or soemthing cool.

or only allow people to apply to imperial if they havent applied to oxbridge

...would probbly make a few people all boohoo etc [and pointless], but it would achieve the goal set in the topic title =))

yeah but imagine how much harder that would make the application process. In the end you'd only be able to apply to one top uni. I don't think any uni should have the right to prevent application if an applicant has applied somewhere else.
Reply 52
Oh, is oxbridge only one university? I thought you could only apply to one of them..[for med at least]
Reply 53
yeah you can only apply to ox or cam, not both, which I think is outrageous. It's the same for all subjects.
Reply 54
guess it saves on admissions processing

No it doesn't. A friend of mine topped the natural sciences course twice in a row, rowed for the college team, was on 2 college ball committees and had a position on the college JCR positions. Got rejected by every single one of the 15+ investment banks he applied to for internships. I think personal qualities are very much understated when people talk about "Oxbridge opens doors" and a lot use excuses as such to justify the fact that no doors are opening for them, when perhaps the problem lies a little bit closer to home. Lets put it this way, you are at Imperial, the Imperial brand will not close any doors for you, but it is up to you to open then, as it is at Oxbridge.

Agreed, was he sociable? Why do you think he got rejected by those ibs?

love2learn7
I still reckon LSE IC would be #1 in the UK if it happened lol

No, I dont think so. Theres no history for the hypothetical institution to stand on and it still wouldn't offer subjects like english, frecnh (languages) which Oxbrdige do as well as the subjects LSE ICL would.

No, the uni doesnt open doors for you, you open the door by capitilising on the fact that your at a top uni. If you did nothing and relied on the uni to open the doors then expect to be disappointed.

I thought Southampton is where its at for engineering?

Branded yes, name tag yes, but only in the eyes of people not employers. Things have changed since the old days when Cam and Ox were the only big names. You'll realise it when you go out to find yourself a job. Say you are an IC medic and you'll see how fast you'll get a job compared to an Oxbridge medic. Or try something like i did computing at imperial and computing at oxford and you'll be shocked at what big firms would prefer.
