You can do anything you want. You are studying law from an academic perspective, not a vocational one. It sounds to me like you've been coerced into the idea of having a career in law, and from this perspective you've decided that medical law might be the most interesting area to practice, if indeed you do have to. But you shouldn't go into law just because your parents want you to or because you're doing a law degree.

well yeah theres practice in law but you can do so much else! a law degree basically opens up any career whatsoever (except medicine/vet... duh) so basically the world is your oyster!

do NOT let your parents force you, many people realise during their law degree that they do not want to be lawyers for whatever reason ... just because they cant see themselves doing that stuff. but bear in mind how many dfferent kinds of lawyers there are, just because you dont like one area of practice doesn't mean there isnt one which is for you out there.

You can always do something non-legal and then come back to do the LPC in a few years time if you change your mind, as your LLB will be valid for 7 years. I know someone who did just that.

Why not do the BVC? lol

It's competitive, but if you're good enough, you'll make it.

They should have Law degree rehab or something... To stop the addiction of reading copious amounts every night.. I'll have withdrawal symptoms I swear...

I plan to do the LPC, but probably not to qualify as a solicitor (as I wouldn't become a Barrister, unless uni changes my mind!).

I think the skills on the LPC are very good skills for many other jobs, so I'd be interested in gaining those skills for perhaps a more management style job.

I've only just started the LPC, but it really is designed for aspiring solicitors and is therefore essentially an introduction to working in practice. I'm not saying there aren't aspects that would be useful in other areas of work, but I'm not sure I'd plan to do it with that in mind. Apart from anything else, it's really expensive!

however, if i really enjoy the degree, i may consider training as a solicitor

Well, it's also a fall back of course. I'll apply for such jobs while I'm doing the LPC and if nothing comes I'll carry on to become a Solicitor!

But yeah, I know it's a very specific course :p:

another person saying "if all else fails, becoming a solicitor is guaranteed so ill do it!!", how naive.

Good luck with that idea.....

would it be possible for someone who has done the llb to go on to do postgrad in a different subject.. eg english, politics, history?

Reply 17

I doubt it. How would you be qualified to take a postgraduate degree in something that you hadn't studied at undergraduate level?

Reply 18

You'd obviously need to check with the uni you wanted to go to, but in theory it's possible. I know someone who did a masters in English after during a Music degree.

Well, it wasn't worded that well, but I wasn't assuming I'd become a Solicitor. I am aware how competitive and hard it is. Perhaps I should have said continue with my attempt to become a Solicitor. I know it's not guaranteed.
