My uni has hundreds of Chinese students but only a small minority integrate with western students and they tend to speak their own languages to each other. I'm hoping to work towards moving to China after I graduate so having friends from there would be great. How can I introduce myself to students from the Chinese community without it being too award?

It's easy. I've been with foreign students before. They're probably more scared than you due to them being in an alien country. Walk up to them, say "hello". Introduce yourself. Nam'saying?
