Urgent accommodation question

I'm considering applying to Hull to start in 2015 and the website doesn't really give me a lot of info on accommodation.

In The Lawns, are kitchens and bathrooms shared? It doesn't say you live in flats of multiple people, it only states there are x amount of rooms, and I can't find anything online which says that there are grouped flats.

That may seem like a really stupid question but I haven't been to the uni and I can't find anything online. I'd really like to live in a flat with multiple people, can't stand the idea of being in a room on my own so it's a big decider for me.
So for the majority of the Lawns, everyone has their own room to themselves (there aren't any shared rooms) but toilets, showers and kitchens are shared (though there is a sink in most rooms). There are some en suite rooms available though these are limited so they go very fast plus they are more expensive. Sharing a bathroom isn't really a problem as you will never be waiting for a toilet as there are quite a few loos in every block so even if one is taken, you can very easily find another. Kitchens tend to be shared between 8/9 people and are actually really good quality (apart from Ferens) considering most of the Lawns get evening meal provided. (Going down for food is also a good chance to socialise).

Anyway, the Lawns is a really sociable place, you will have your own room but you will be surrounded by people, all in the same situation as you so it shouldn't be that hard to make friends so don't worry. There are about 26 people in each block alone so if anything it's more sociable than a flat. Also in a flat you would have a room to yourself as well, but like in the Lawns the kitchens, bathrooms, social areas, corridors, ect. are shared.

Hi,
There are lots of private accommodation available to you as well - Including us! That are a lot closer to the university than University's own accommodation. We have loads of 1st years living with us every year and its always a fun and friendly environment. We have both en-suite and standard rooms as well as super fast WiFi across the whole site! We are also part of the HullSTARS campaign which means we are an approved accommodation provider for University students, and we have inspections every year.
If you want more information why not check out our website or our facebook page, we are always happy to have a chat - so feel free to drop us a message!

The Lawns is where I just moved into a month ago now.

I believe it's mostly en-suite and as people in my block picked non-en-suite and didn't get it because it was either a more popular option or more rooms are just en-suite. I also got the catered option which is 1 meal a day, the food is actually pretty good and there's a lot of choice. The kitchens are shared, I have 21 people in my block and 3 kitchens, they're pretty big though, we get 1 fridge and 1 oven each kitchen and lots of cupboards, I think self-catered get 2 though each kitchen. Blocks are 7 people per floor and there's 3 floors, at least for en-suite, I think non-en-suite is 9 people per floor, and I know they have 2 bathrooms between them and a sink in each their rooms. The rooms themselves are pretty big, although the size of them is decided by luck as in one floor the size of the rooms will vary, the guy next door to me has a room 50% bigger than mine, that said I still have loads of space. The cleaning service comes in once a week to clean your room and do a pretty good job of it I think.

The Uni warns us a lot about 3rd party accommodation providers and that we will be told by them "YOU MUST CHOOSE A CONTRACT FOR NEXT YEAR RIGHT NOW!!!!" when in fact it's just a load of crap, Uni has more than enough accommodation for everyone and there's plenty of time until you need to think about it. If you already have 4 friends going to the same University you wouldn't mind living with for a year then you can go for student housing through the university rather than halls like The Lawns, I've seen them and they are pretty good. Most 1st year students go to the lawns as that's where most other 1st year students are at. You find 4 people over the year you'd want to live with and you all go for student housing 2nd year.

There are some problems I want to point out with The Lawns though, first off is the silverfish, although they are pretty scarce so far they are definitely there, that said I can't really blame the Uni because Hull is pretty damp most of the time so it's hard to keep them at bay, pretty easy to kill off though with the right stuff when you know what cracks their living in. Another thing is that if your a quiet person who enjoys your sleep like me you probably not gonna get a lot of it... It's pretty loud, and some people in my block will play a guitar with an amp till 4 in the morning, people will be walking past your block talking and the windows and doors are hardly soundproof and closing doors makes a lot of noise no matter how careful people are, walls are pretty soundproof though. In the one hall with shared bathrooms I been to all the toilets make a HUGE noise that the whole block would hear which is annoying, glad I chose en-suite which doesn't have that problem, lol. The laundry facility is basically £3 a wash and £1 a dry, so for me that's £4 a week.

Also I should mention the internet speeds. Wifi and cable is great, you get 15 Mbps download AND UPLOAD (which is really surprising as most other services would kust give you 2) for free. It's also pretty reliable as I've never dropped below 12 on speed tests, whereas compared to Virgin or Sky or BT which would promise you 60 and only give you 15 at max. You can pay £8 a month to get that doubled as well, as a gamer and Computer Scientist I'm tempted to get that deal. Word of warning though, if you have a 360 you can't connect it to KeySurf (what the provider is called), I think if you wanted to you'd have to get it connected to some other form of internet (like at the Lawns Center which uses edufram (50Mbps download/upload)) and create an account on keysurf before you can finally get it to work, haven't talked to anyway if they tried that yet though. PS3 though doesn't have this problem, and of course PC (Master Race) doesn't either.
