brasenose is super cute with window boxes and really nice people. christchurch is too big jesus is too much like the son of a famous creator
Brasenose is cool .... and their JCR president (for the michaelmas term) is awesome.

I would say CC is the best out of all of them. It's huge, and the facilities are amazing. Brasenose college is the one with the huge dome, so you can spot it from anywhere.

No no no!!! The big dome (Rad Cam) is just in the square next to Brasenose. Photos of the college cunningly (!) get it into the picture to make shots in the prospectus look all that more impressive.

Quoting directly from the Keble and Jesus thread:

Jesus!!! There's a fairly comprehensive entry on the TSR wiki as to choosing a college (or at least the Jesus entry is ) but to summarise:

- Jesus has a reputation (well deserved) for being one of the very friendliest college (small college = tight nit community)
- Being rich = low rents compared to other places and low food prices
- Accomodation provided for all 3 years, but in flats rather than college. i.e. no messing with estate agents but lots of freedom anyway
- Very much an all rounder college - lots of music and sports going on but everyone accepted
- The music room has one of the best views in the city
- Atmosphere (with regards to tutors) is in the middle - pushed, but not work-crazy like some places.

Also we take an insane number of Geographers (8 i think in my year) and have a very good reputation for Geography, although I'm not sure why - perhaps the tutor is very good.
Jesus is quite rich for its size, which is a good thing, although Christchurch is also obviously rich.
Christ Church, although i love it to bits, is full of tourists.
Brasenose is ok i guess  but always makes out that the radcam is part of the college
....its got to be Jesus! one of the richest colleges (didn't know this when i applied), we have a great name (allows so many funny comments like "i've got a friend in Jesus" and "i saw Jesus today"...well i think they're funny) and like i said in the Keble vs Jesus thread...me and Bekaboo are there so what more could you ask for! :p:
oh and its really central which is great if you are lazy like me!
and its next to the covered market which is home to Ben's cookies and moo-moo's!! (i have my priorities right you see  )

And me too!!!
And my friend's mum went to Brasenose, had a great time, but told me not to go there as its named after a big nose...is that the kind of place you want to be associated with???

Thanks for all the replies...it is probably now between brasenose and jesus (I was kind of attracted to Christ Church simply because of a certain magical quality...can't quite put my finger on it... *hangs head in shame*).
At the moment, I've got Jesus written down but my geography teacher told me that it is hard to get into and that I would be better off choosing somewhere else (he told me to go to St Catherine's because we have 'good links with that college' since the other geography teacher went there but as a result, everyone flocked there and we are only allowed 2 people per college regardless of subject. Also, too be honest...I kind of wanted a nice old place near the centre  ). Furthermore, at Jesus there is another person applying there (albeit for economics and management) and he is a better candidate...will this affect my chances? (brasenose has no-one). Also if we both get in then it would be awkward since although he used to be a friend, he always asks "what are you doing here?" at the Oxbridge meetings :frown: .
Anyhow, any more advice will be much appreciated...

p.s. cookies are a plus  but what on earth are moo-moo's

Moomoos is a newly opened milkshake shop in the covered market (haven to all the little shops that make Oxford magical and Jesus' next door neighbour) where they will turn pretty much anything into a smoothie or a milkshake - their menu is two walls long. Pretty much any mainstream chocolate bar or biscuit plus just about every fruit I've ever heard of :p:

The E+M candidate won't matter at all - the Geographers won't even know of his existence and if that doesn't make you feel any better there are plenty of people in my year from the same school (a Historian and a Mathmo, and a Musician and a MFL plus probs other I don't know of) and if you take into account that Hills Road sends a couple of hundred to Oxford each year they must have multiples in many colleges!

I guess with our reputation for Geography it might be harder to get in, but I also recall that a lot of people who didn't get places got farmed out to other colleges - I keep meeting people aroudn the place who I thought hadn't got in but just ended up somewhere else!!

Apply for Jesus  Then you can play football and shout "Where are you Jesus?!" and tell people when you meet them "Now you've got a friend in Jesus " (somebody told me that now they had a friend in Jesus on my first night of freshers and now I tend to say it a lot when I'm drunk and meeting people hehe!)

Hills Road doesn't even send 100 per year to Oxford and Cambridge put together. It's more like 60 per year to Oxbridge.

It was meant to be an exaggeration because I didn't know the exact number  Still think it's more than 60 to Oxbridge but meh there was a point to it

APPLY TO JESUS!! just simply because of him saying that!! apply, get in, and wipe the floor with him  i hate people like that so much! (ok, maybe hate is a bit harsh  )
it won't affected your chances at all. and i wouldn't concern yourself with these "school link things"....they don't work.

basically, apply to Jesus, and if it is really competitive for geography, then you will get placed at another college anyway, like bekaboo said. and whose to say you won't be one of the people they choose!
Reply 15
Yeah, I think I'll just stick with it since it does seem like a friendly college  (on open day, the geographer showing me around was quite nice). I also don't want to back down and choose another college because of any 'school links' (which now I know is quite a common thing and can rest assured). Thanks for all the replies - a great help! Oh yeah, how do they allocate a second college to you...is it entirely random???

mmm...the first thing that I will do if I get in is to pay a visit to that milkshake place...even if I don't I'll still want to try it
Reply 16
Ok, but seriously, Brasenose is lovely and friendly...even disregarding my bias...
but Jesus is even more lovely

and about the second college allocation thing: it's random in the sense that you have no control over which one it will be, but i read somewhere on the oxford website that (at least for biochem) they will allocate you a college that has less applicants/less popular that year to help to give you a better chance of getting in some where if your college doesn't think you are one of its strongest candidates (sorry, that may be wrong, but i read something like that somewhere, however its quite trivial anyway and probably irelevent so don't worry about it )

Yeh as chocolate cheese says there's no rhyme or reason to it but colleges who haven't filled their quota will become 2nd choice colleges whereas those who are over subscribed won't keep interviewing. That said I was sent a bit of paper with my 2nd and 3rd choices on it - my interviews bore no relation. If you want to come up to Oxford and have a look around at some point the porters are really lovely - or if you just wanna have a wander then gimme a shout and I'll see if I can get free to show you around
see...just look how friendly the Jesubites are!!! you've just got to apply to Jesus!
