Is it worth applying to cambridge with these grades?

hi!
Was wondering if anyone can give me an honest answer. Im considering applying to study SPS at cambridge but do not want to waste an application on a university i have no chance of getting in to!

These are my As level UMS scores
history- 266 A
Maths- 250 A
Chemistry- 230 B
Biology- 232 B
SFPU- 230 B (science for public understanding)

Im taking history, maths and chemistry this year and reckon i can bump chemisty up to an A. However im very aware that oxford/cambridge are lookin for only very high A's these days.
I know that i want get in without trying, but is it really worth a shot?
thanks guys

Honestly, your probably not going to get in.

You have a slim chance, and oviously that would improve with a very impresive interview and so on.

If you have 6 others you really like apart from cambridge apply to those six.

But if you dont have six you'd really love to go to, give cambridge a shot.

I would definitely recommend applying. You have AABBB, with your Bs being close to As. Plus your only humanity subject is an A, and for a subject like SPS, cambridge are going to care the most about this because it is the most relevant one to the course.

I would have thought you'll definitely get an interview. Yes there are people out there with better grades than you, but there are also people who get in with worse. If you have an amazing PS and reference, that should put you on level footing with other people and the interview will do the rest.

Also if you went a better idea of whether you have a chance have a look in the Cambridge forum, but they'll probably say the same thing as me. Just give it a go, and good luck with your application
yeah exactly, as long as you get an interview you have a chance to show them if your right for the course. UMS scores are only one factor oxbridge would consider, out of about 5-6 other factors. GO FOR IT! plus its only one place on the ucas form im sure you can find loads of other great places.
I think its definately worth applying! You are taking what Oxbridge perceives as highly academic subjects, and to be going into A2 with AAB is not bad with those subjects. I applied with AAAC after AS and despite having really high A's was rejected after interview - I think it may have something to do with Sociology and Eng Lang A level. My friend had AAB in perhaps more academic subjects and was pooled, so it seems you don't have to have straight As. Go for it! You really have nothing to lose.

Well im applying to SPS and this is what I have at AS;

History - 251/300 A
English Literature - 259/300 A
English Language - 258/300 A
Business Studies - 237/300 B
General Studies - 270/300 A

There isnt a great deal of difference between our UMS marks and your subjects are definately 'respected'. My advice therefore, go for it (just dont apply to the same college as me  j/k). You will need a good PS, reference and interview as our grades definately aren't among the best there. Best of luck, do you have a college in mind?

Cambridge interviews >95% of applicants. So basically, you almost certainly get an interview.

And as has been said, the interview is by far the most important aspect of the application. If you're interested in the course, definitely go for it.

HAHA exactly the same  Please do let me know what you think, can i PM you my msn?
Go for it. You have nothing to lose. The interview is a lot more important than your UMS marks so be prepared. Cambridge don't require really high UMS marks, they just ask for AAA at A-level generally.

With grades like that, you are more likely to get into Oxbridge than you are to get into other universities that might demand 3As (like Durham, Warwick etc.) - this is because when applying to Cambridge your application is guaranteed to be actually considered and looked at in detail, wheras often other universities are so swamped with applications that they will throw away anyone who doesn't have excellent grades. If you can prove that you are a suitable candidate, you have a good chance.

Put it this way: having straight As is no guarantee of an offer, so not having straight As is no guarantee of a rejection.
If you are predicted AAA, the AS levels shouldn't be too much of an issue. Being predicted AAA will mean you're very likely to get an interview, so make sure you are predicted that. AS levels aren't as important as some people make out. People have got into Cambridge before with straight Bs at AS- predicted grades are far more important, and above all, the interview is. Below average grades can be made up for by an excellent interview and (if you have one) written test.

If you have the predicted grades, what could cause you not to get an interview?

Perhaps submitting a really awful, incoherent essay?

If predicted AAA, you have as good a chance as anyone. DO NOT let anyone discourage you from making an application.

thanks for all the advice guys especially at such an anal post!

I am definelty applying to Cambridge and after having visited last week i feel WAY more confident about the interview situation. As you said the way to gain a place is with an excellent interview,PS etc. and i feel like i can give that.

Clearly once you have your As grades theres no point fretting about them, you've just got to work with what you've got. The only reason i really questioned it in the first place was because of the pressure that people like to pile on each other!
anyway cheers again!
