How would I fully answer this question?

Aim - To investigate if young people are more sarcastic than old people?

Identify the independent and dependent variables and fully operationalise? (4 marks)

That's not the full question surely..?
You'd identify the IV and DV in the method of how the aim is tested and explain them in context

Unless you're supposed to be creating your own study, in that case decide how you'd test it, then explain the IV and DV in the context of your own method, e.g. the DV would be a difference in scores on a sarcasm questionnaire etc.

I'm pretty awful at research methods myself though

Without the method, it's a bit difficult to answer. This is just what I would say without the method...
IV= Age (Put into categories. For example, Young is someone who is 25 or younger. Old is someone who is 60 or older.)
DV= How sarcastic they are (Operationalising it by looking for behavioral categories related to sarcasm)

I wouldn't take my word for it though, haha.

Thanks! This has helped a lot. I didn't know who to fully operationalise them before.
