Accused of Discrimination....

Hello There,

Well this girl I have known for a while accused me of discriminating...

She asked me about kids...

So i said that I would love my son/daughter to do Economics or Engineering at Cambridge...

and she goes you shouldnt say that because there are other subjects which are good like media and international relations.

So i said that I have a higher respect for people who do Maths, engineering, economics because the courses are much more rigorous and harder..

So she got really upset and blocked me on MSN.

Am I in the wrong here? I just have a preference for those subjects over media/international relations, is this discriminating?

Any comments welcomed.

It's preference more than discrimination.

Personally I have a little more respect for people who do literature, media etc. related courses because it requires more imagination and creativity, but I don't get upset to hear the opposite.

Reply 2

Yes, I agree its a preference...but is it something you would get upset about if I said something on the contrary? I respect your opinion, but I told her that because Im an Asian and my family comes from an accountancy/business background...I have a higher respect for maths, physics, finance, etc. She got upset and blocked me...I mean with all due respect, at least she should have continued with the discussion without getting all angry and upset?

Reply 3

Yeah, she overreacted.

Reply 4

No not discriminating, its just what you prefer. I regard Maths subjects as more challenging than others like the arts.

Reply 5

She's probably narrow minded and don't like people having a different opinions to her. Ignore it.

Reply 6

You're entitled to your own opinion, and if she can't handle that then she's not very open minded or mature.

She's also probably taking Media at Uni

Reply 7

Wow, what a conversation, and what an overreaction.

Reply 8

If you dont have more than 15 hours of lectures a week then your course is a joke.

End of.

I am the discriminator.

Good! She's taken the hard work out of your job screening weirdos out of your life.

Be meeting plenty of new people regularly and she'll soon be gone from your mind as well.

Yeah but for maths it's doesn't seem to matter if your illiterate, do you ever see maths students in the library?
No,they have to be told everything in lectures.
(not trying to be offensive but just coz I don't sit in lectures for 15 hours doesn't mean I don't work hard)

Any how...
she's probably being hormonal, post her chocolate.

Tell her to take a chill pill.

I didn't mean it, was responding to something posted earlier. as I made clear.

Good God! The porblems people have! I wish I had your problem.

You can hardly call it discrimination, call it.... well..... errrrrmmm...... a waste of time. So she has blocked you, big deal....

I say move on.

Reply 16

Wow! I'd have blocked her for having regard for those who don't do Economics or Engineering at Cambridge! That said, I wouldn't have blocked you, I'd have just thought you were a bit narrow minded.

I hope when you actually have kids you realise that it's more important that they are happy than what or where they study.

I do agree with others that she overreacted, I would've been a bit ticked that it sounded like you were insulting what I wanted to do but I'd have more likely just told you to stop being narrow-minded rather than blocking you. I wouldn't have gone in a complete strop over it.

She's obviously a cretin.

She obviously wasn't good enough to get into Engineering or Economics at Cambridge.
