St Hugh's College (Oxford) Students and Applicants

Hi,

I have applied for Biochemistry at St. Hugh's. I really liked the college and its grounds when I visited. Anyone else for Biochemistry? Does anyone know when interviews are and how they're like? Any example questions would help.

Thanks

Here's the interview timetable: http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/applying-to-oxford/interviews/interview-timetable

Lots of information about what they're like here: http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/applying-to-oxford/interviews
(although sadly nothing Biochem specific)
I've applied for Law at St.Hugh's.
Hi there,

I received an invitation today to interview at St Hugh's (I originally applied to Brasenose) and I am having serious concerns about it being relatively far removed from the city centre, libraries, university gym etc.

I was wondering if any current St Hugh's or other Oxford students would be able to tell me what the student life is like for students at St Hughs i.e. if it suffers from being isolated.

If this is the case I was wondering what the odds of me being interviewed at a different college would be considering the fact that I was already pooled once.

Thanks
Anyone heard from St. Hugh's yet with regards to interviews?

It really is only far removed in Oxford terms! You can cycle from the centre of Oxford to Hugh's in 10/15min and several bus routes will drop you nearby. There are a couple of other colleges out on that side of town and there will be plenty of people living out in their 2nd year who are as far away from the city centre than Hugh's.

You'd want a bike if you were going over to Iffley Rd (i.e. the main university sports complex) regularly. It's true that St Hugh's is further out than the other colleges but it's still much closer to the action than you would be at many other universities. You just get used to the idea of everything being no more than a ten minute walk away if you're in one of the more central colleges, which is nice but obvioiusly not essential for getting by.

Your chances of being interviewed at a further college depends on what your subject is. In some subjects, all interviewees are seen by a second college, while for others the chances of being re-interviewed elsewhere depends on how your first batch of interviews goes. But your odds of re-interview elsewhere won't have been affected by being pooled.

I would add that you shouldn't be concerned about being reallocated at this stage. Brasenose is a very popular college, so will inevitably have to redistribute its applicants to other colleges to make sure all the good applicants can be interviewed. It's most likely that you've just been unlucky, rather than it being an indication that you're a weaker candidate.

I'd say you're overselling the distance a bit you'd have to be cycling very slowly to make it take 15 minutes and the idea of taking a bus into the city centre seems a bit far-fetched, although I suppose if you were a slow walker and had to do it every day...
I applied for maths... still waiting for an interview decision :s-smilie:

Has anyone received a rejection, just wondering whether they send out all the offers first and then the rejections or do they reply in order?

Is there anyone at St Hugh's who can tell me how easy self catering is there? What kitchen availability there is etc, as I'd much rather cook for myself most of the time.

If you're still wondering about this - all of the accommodation has kitchens and it's very easy to cook for yourself. It depends where you are in college, and the kitchen quality does vary, but you'll find that most have a fridge (and occasionally freezer), electric hob, and a small oven. You'll most likely be in Main Building in your first year - they have huge kitchens shared between a whole bunch of rooms, so it can get busy in there but you'll have everything you need. They also have massive kitchen tables which is great if you want to cook and eat as a group.

The meal system works as a pay-as-you-go, so you just top up your bod card and use it as and when; there's no pre-paying required which works out really well if you're going to be cooking most of the time.

Thank you! so you can leave stuff in the fridge/possible freezer in your kitchen then?
Yep - you will get the occasional person who steals your milk but I think that's standard! I did bring a mini fridge to keep milk cool in my room (you know, the kind that can fit a couple of cans), but I don't think that's really necessary. If you've got a big kitchen you'll get a cupboard where you can leave all your cooking stuff as well, but I think that doesn't generally happen until third year (can't remember which buildings have that set-up, sorry!). You can also keep a kettle in your room.
