Depression

Does anyone else get really annoyed with people who tell you they're depressed all the time.

I'm anon caus the guy reads ALL my posts. sorry.

One of my mates was telling me that he suffers from depression.

I told him that I was a little sick of people being fashionably depressed.

If you think you suffer from an illness you get diagnosed by doctor.

It's like me saying I've got cancer and telling everyone, but not going to a doctor!

Just to all those whining people.....DO NOT TELL PEOPLE YOU SUFFER FROM DEPRESSION UNLESS YOU HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED BY A DOCTOR.

YOU ARE NOT QUALIFIED FOR SELF DIAGNOSIS.

Rant over.

People who are depressed don't always think to go to a doctor. And doctors aren't always helpful.
It doesn't help that quite a few people say they're depressed when they're not, but if you say that people can't diagnose themselves why do you think you can judge that they're making it up?

I cant think why anyone would want to tell people they are depressed if they arent. It took me ages to actually accept that i am, and tell people im close to (and here i dont give a damn) I used to feel ashamed for it. Now im not, but i wouldnt ram it in anyones face
Saoirse, that's it. That's where I read that really good sig.

If somebody misses out on the last chocolate doughnut, they seem to be depressed at my college.
It's silly. Depression is more than just missing out on a food thing. Argh.
Recently I have been having the same thoughts and people who I know use the term very loosly although Ronove made a good point as to who are we to judge, quite contridictory of our view.
You can be depressed without suffering from clinical depression. It's normal.
Sometimes people just say 'Man I'm depressed' without meaning they're actually clinically depressed and want to show off about it (people actually do that?) - normally they just mean they're temporarily sad or upset about something.
I personally get really irritated by my friends who diagnose themselves with something they dont have (like clinical depression) because they cant be bothered to deal with their problems when they are clearly not ill and perfectly capable of dealing with their problems.

Most depressed people unless they are very close to you arent going to tell you they are depressed, or suffering from depression. Many / Most people arent even noticiable. With females it maybe a little easier to diagnose because of emotions/ estrogen. But in the end generally and keep in mind Im not a physcologist but most male and females will have the same conditions how some may have better coping skills than others.

BEWARE OF HYPOCONDRIATES

Giliwoo comments as follows:

Being depressed - a depressed mood - and depression are two different things. It affects one in ten people, so don not be so judgemental. There are different kinds of depression ranging from bipolar "manic" depression, to long term and cyclical depression. It is an illness, it has symptoms, like any illness. As such, we feel your insensetivity to what can be a socially and mentally debilitating illness, is quite unwarranted.

No, I've been (semi) diagnosed as Seriously depressed, I know how dehabilitating it is.
I just find the use of the word "depression" is completly overused, its a loose phrase that can be used over the slightest problem; it seems that everybody is depressed now.

You sound like a crap friend.
Yeah the term does get bandied around quite loosely but then I think its got two meanings anyway. There's being clinically depressed and then there's being "depressed" or other words really down and fed up. I don't think anyone who uses the word in the second sense really means anything by it-its just that the double meaning has crept into our vocab.

My sentiments exactly.

And the use of the 'anon' function is indicative of pure cowardice.
