DOWNLOADING in halls

I was thinking...would you be able to download if you were stealing someone elses wireless connection, rather than using the accomodations network. I can't test this out as I can't seem to connect to the nearest unsecured wireless connection. But if you could, I guess you could freely download...

Well depending on the way that wireless network is setup, of course you would, but that's what we call "illegal".
I think if people are dumb enough to run an insecure network, they deserve to have it hijacked. This may contradict my previous point about iTunes, but then, I'm not paying to run that..

It still wouldn't work I don't think because it's all the stuff they make you download before you can connect that stops it. I think... I'll try connecting my laptop at home now and see if Limewire works.

Well duh, the whole downloading free music itself is illegal in the first place.

Debatable.
Well, I just received an e-mail which gave me a stern telling off for trying to connect using Ares Galaxy. It actually said that the University isn't blocking that traffic, but I can't connect anyway and I've already uninstalled it. Just a word of warning to people: Don't try to get round it. They're watching you!
That's weird, we all used it last year. They probably read this forum and ban anything they see us reccomend.

A bit harsh. Not everyone is as computer literate as you. But you have made yourself a marked man now, so I wouldn't recommend hijacking anyone!
Hah, we're already paid-up NTL members. You really don't have to be that computer literate to add a password; it prompts you to do so when you set up the network. I mean, you wouldn't complain if your house got robbed when you left your door open, would you?

It's so easy to do if you know about passwording it. If you don't know that kinda stuff I assume you'd get someone who did know about computers to do it, so I agree, it's so simple to set up there's no excuse *not* to protect your connection!!

i know it's not as great as working torrents and stuff, but if you download the freeware softperfect network scanner netscan, you will be able to access the shared folders on all the university network computers, the ip range will be divided into the different accomodations and stuff. don't know about now, but last year i got a lot of albums and movies and stuff from there, since there's a surprising amount of stuff being shared. only problem is you have to look through every folder to find the good stuff.
How do you do that?
I tried downloading that freeware but when I scanned for files, it wouldn't let me access them saying I don't have permisson etc.

Hardly anything came up when I tried.

Ares worked all last year at Dev (although I didn't find out until after Christmas!). I'm sure I remember having to change to port settings though to get it to work - mine's set at 22065 if that's any help.
