i think it means write an essay with illustrations. but the meaning of illustration is this context is somewhat ambiguous. as you say it could mean drawings or examples (of some sort). Dunno if this helps, your best off asking someone in the know, from the university, i think. Or equally look at the online specification and see if it is mentioned.
Send a quick email to the person who set it to check what they mean.

eek, ok. I have allready written the essay

If it does need pictures that wouldn't be too hard to put in.

Jus thought there might be a concensus, but obviously an e-mail is now best.

the essay is an overview of brunel from an engineering/architecture perspective. There is certainly no need for pictures. I was just wondering if this was a common phrase - that would have a common interpretation.

well if it's architecture it's pretty likely that it means actual drawings
I was asked to write one of these in an exam...about bacteria. So i drew lots of labelled diagrams to illustrate the point.
Indeed. As they say, a picture speaks a thousand words, so you'll probably be best to use some technical plans for the engineering part of things, explaining things like the tunnel boring shield he and Marc Brunel came up with for the Thames tunnel, or the theory behind the Great Britain and Great Eastern (that drag upon the hull increases at the square of the length, whereas something else increases at the cube, hence the bigger the ship the more economical it will be), or the theory behind the atmouspheric railway and so on. And the broad gauge.

From the architectural point of view, maybe have some pictures of his achievements (Bristol station, Paddington (both architectural achievements)), the portals of Box tunnel, and so on. It would really help to illustrate any points you made by refering to pictured examples.
Did you do your illustrated report? i am also struggling with my recommendations, i dont have a clue.x
I am in the process of finishing it as it’s due tomorrow but the hardest part now is making it more concise as I am way over my word count so I am trying to cut it down without losing valuable information. I think I have gone into far too much detail.

Hi guys, this is (was) a thread from 2006 and therefore zombified. I'm closing it now but for further similar queries please check out the Biology, biochemistry and other life sciences study help forum.
