Sorry another sub fusc thread, opinion on shops

Hey,

Sorry to start another thread on sub fusc but just wanted peoples opinions who are already at oxford on which was the best shop to order the gown and mortar board from, especially as my parents said they would pay for it if i order before i go

Been looking at shepherd & woodward on the high street, walters of oxford on turl street and castell & son on Broad street, these are all offering the same pack for the same price so is there anything to distinguish between them or are there any that should be avoided for any reason,

thanks guys

xx

Basically there's very little difference - the year I went up they all offered the same price for the same deal so I just went for Walters because it was on the Turl (I'm at Jesus). As it happens I also bought other stuff from there later in the year and the little old bloke who runs it is such a sweetie!!

How often you wear your gown will depend on two things: whether or not your college wears gowns to formal (Jesus don't but most people's seem to) and whether or not you sing (most - I think all in fact - chapel choirs since in gowns, unless they have cassocks). If the answer to both of the above is no then you will wear your gown for matriculation, principal's (or Dean's or president's) collections and exams. i.e. about 5 times in a year...

All three shops are owned by the same company... it's not a coincidence that they all offer exactly the same deals and all come with a 'warning' identically worded.

What is the slightly cheaper one we get offered in the packs like?

Well, if it doesn't have the "right" label then you might slip down that pecking order...

Is shepherd and Woodward acceptable?

I probably can't afford the right label on most occasions, so I will slip down the pecking order anyway.

since lincoln didn't send me any sub fusc offers, what price are the shops offering? I know OUSU charge £35 for a gown and mortarboard, but no bow tie, ede and ravenscroft £37 for gown, mortarboard and bowtie. What are the others charging?

Did I hear somewhere that one company was offering a college scarf as part of the deal? Or is that my imagination?

Ede & Ravenscroft are offering a free college scarf, tie, cufflinks or teddy with each order.

Do some colleges have you wear it if you are sheparding interviewees? I'm sure the nice people who took me to my interviews were all wearing theirs.

ede and ravenscroft offer a free scarf/tie/cuff links/teddy bear if you buy each subfusc item separately (at a cost of £52), from what the guy said to me. Or you can get the subfusc stuff without the gift for £37- maybe cheaper for girls dunno. What price are the other shops offering for the package?

I got a form to fill out in my freshers pack to order the cap and gown for £35 and pick it up from the OUSU shop when you get there (you can also download an order form from their website). There are no freebies or anything, and i doubt that it'd be the right "label" but, to be honest, i'm just glad that's one less thing i'll have to think about when i get down there.
I have said it in another thread but at shepherd and woodward I got a gown, mortarboard and ribbon for £30, which is cheaper than the OUSU deal
I'm probably going to get mine from Shepherd and Woodward simply cos that's where my bf got his, it's only £29 for the girls version and then I'll buy a college scarf once it gets a bit nippier

I have to attend a graduate matriculation ceremony (don't know if these are seperate from the undergrads or not), and haven't received any information about where to get the gown and mortar board from. Graduates are expected to know this stuff already apparently. Is it essential to order in advance? I'm now having nightmares about being left academically naked because the last gown was taken... please help!

Don't panic they never run out of this stuff! It helps to preorder but they'll have tonnes spare because they have to preorder loads of each size etc

It's the same as that of the undergrads. As per Bekaboo's advice, you could preorder but it is also very probable that there will be sufficient gowns at the shops on the Broad and High St. No need to worry

edit: oops. First sentence refers to matriculation

Graduates gowns are similar shape to commoners gowns but longer.
