why... why in gods name would you do this, other than for 5 mins of fame... it will bloody hurt, and they could cause serious damage.

Nah, ever since Jackass there have been all sorts of copycat groups. Two of the more well-known ones from the UK are Welsh idiots Dirty Sanchez and Scottish eejits Team Squirrel.
Sure, they might get some form of odd pleasure from it, but most just see it as being a way to become famous like Johnny Knoxville et al.
