Chipped knuckle - will it heal itself?

Hi all,
I recently either chipped or fractured my knuckle while using the lawn mower approximately 3 months ago. The knuckle in question aches each time I clench my fist. I went to see a doctor about the issue today, who informed me that it was either a chip or fracture. She said if it was a fracture, the pain should go away in approximately another 3 months.
I forgot to ask her, however, what would happen if it was a chipped knuckle. Will the pain go away eventually? Or stay exactly the same for the rest of my life? Will leaving it for another 3 months cause any further damage?
