So recently in the news there have been stories about sexism on games and death threats and hashtags flying about with slogans, but what I can't work out is what is actually going on?
From the looks of it some woman posted some videos about games being sexist, which lets be honest - many are (or at least very immature) with their chainmail bikinis. Then some people raged about her comments....and then it seems to spiral into a mess from that point on.

So what is actually going on and why do people think that games depiction of women isn't pretty bad (although lets be honest, most media at the moment is pretty bad for this)?

GamerGate is what happens when women try to shield themselves from criticism by shouting 'sexism'. Anita Sarkeesian is a hypocrite who has little to do with GamerGate, she was before then, and her videos sparked a different row, she is just throwing her weight around now because she can't go 5 minutes without publicity.

GamerGate is basically a call by the community for the reformation of video game journalism. The issue started when an ex-boyfriend of Zoe Quinn, a game publisher, released a detailed blog post about how she cheated on him with five different guys, all involved in the video game journalism industry. A few of these guys are unnamed, and the ones who were named then admitted to having a relationship with Quinn. These guys all gave her favourable reviews and publicity, and pushed her game (named Depression Quest, and a title she used as a method of exploiting Robin Williams death) onto Steam Greenlight, with the aim of getting it onto Steam and making her money. This game is dreadful, so obviously questions were raised, and Quinn covered herself by crying misogyny, getting her friends in the media to publish many articles defending her, and stating that gamers were sexist (which then sparked a response known as WeAreNotYourShield). Quinn also did things like causing a charity project for female game designers to be crashed due to them not funding her project, and apparently faked hatemail, death-threats and doxxing herself (and Phil Fish) to protect her own skin. That is Gamergate, and the media (who are naturally covering up any evidence of corruption) are twisting it into a male vs female debate.

So it is some drama queen in denial about ****ing up? Yeah, I can sadly believe that as it is pretty bloody common.

It is a shame it is such a mess as there are some good points. Games do need to mature massively a ditch the chainmail bikini crap and journalism for games has been dodgy for years due to publishers bribing journalists for a long time as well as most game reviewers having an average IQ of 10.

Partially, and partially the nefarious way the journalists have covered it up and instead shifted the focus to sexism.

Nothing important. As more and more casual people have lost interest, it has become increasingly dominated by lunatics.

It's amazing how many earthshaking things happen in little bubbles out there that no one knows about.

Sounds to me like two sides being really dramatic towards each other and everyone will forget it faster than you can say Jan Moir or Live Earth.

And it's times like these when I'm kinda proud to be a gamer, not backing down because some crazy ***** cried sexism when somebody told her she was crap
