Me! Me! Me!

Sorry, got slightly overexcited there. I was starting to think it would just be me living there all alone. I'm in 145 so I'm guessing that's the same floor as you. I'm a bit concerned though because 1) it said in the information there were three floors and one shower per floor. Is that not 30 people per shower?! I'm all for sharing but...

And also it's costing more than en suite would have been to live in Fairfax! Not that I particularly wanted en suite but you know... It'd better be good!

I think it is supposed to be quite nice, everyone knows everyone kind of thing plus it's not an ugly 60s building! Anyway, I'm really glad someone else is living there and it won't just be me all on my own!

I'm in fairfax to. Room FX/219 what ever that means.

Bit gutted about being of campus and about the extra expense but at least we get a decent breakfast:smile:

I think it means you're on the second floor, in room 19.

I hope the breakfast is ok, I'm quite happy with a bowl of cereal and a yoghurt in a morning so it's a bit annoying to have to it provided. Especially since we'll still have to buy cereal and stuff for a weekend!

Same here a bowl of rice krispies has kept me going for the last 18 years so i really dont need the cooked breakfast. Now i just have to find the extra £500 needed. As you said before it better be good.
Being part of vanbrugh however looks a plus when looking at their freshers plan:smile:

lol, im in FX/100 so that means i have the first room on the first floor? (am confused)
yeh, i dont usually have breakfast even if i do get up in time, anyone know when they stop serving, could be an early dinner for me.

Tsk tsk you should always have breakfast! It sets you up for the day, I'm telling you. But even so I don't like being forced into paying extra for it!

Time of day - I'm guessing by my logic you're in room 0 on the first floor... Maybe my logic is somewhat flawed!

What subjects do you guys both do? I'm an English student so I have lots of reading I should be doing right about now.

The only thing I'm not impressed about Vanbrugh is that there's a distinct lack of fancy dress events!

I'm doing Economics, Ecology and Environment. However i have no idea what it is about so hopefully it should be an experience.

Oh my god they sound scary! Far too many Es and Ss for my liking!

Fairfax House for me, room FX/023, so ground floor, so that clarifies your situation, 1xx = first floor.

One of the best things about our accomodation is that it is by far the closest to York centre  Judging by pictures of the outside, it looks like a really nice building as well.

Hope the breakfast is good, I always eat a lot at every meal anyway, so I will get value out of it if the food is half decent.

Anyone else excited about the free pool table? I know I am. I know between 90 people we can't be on it all the time or something, but I'd imagine there will still be plenty of chances to play. I play a lot of pool (or did while I was at college) and really enjoy it, but I suck anyway. Pool is ace.

I'm not happy about 38 week let and forced into buying breakfast, due to all the extra expense of this, but I'll just have to accept it.

Do any second and above years know much about Fairfax? Could you fill us in if you do, cheers.

It does look pretty, much nicer than those scary 60s buildings on campus! And with 90 students we're all bound to get to know each other's faces at least. It should be fun.

It does like quite nice, and a pool table, its not sounding too bad.
what course you doing JohnC

Thanks for putting up those pics. Looks pretty good, probably the nicest looking accomodation on the outside compared to the stuff on campus. Also the pool table i have to agree is a big bonus almost worth the extra money needed to live here.

Doess anyone know where any pics of what Fairfax looks like in side can be found?

Hello there, I spent my first year living in Fairfax House. It has its good and bad points so I'll list them for you...

Good:
The community is ace - we had a little vendetta type thing with Vanbrugh - all in the name of fun of course.
The rooms are ok, nothing really bad, just basic really although some are huuuge and others are quite small even though you pay the same amount.
There is a breakfast which is an incentive to get up in the morning.
We managed to get the JCR to buy us a huuuge TV for the common room.
The pool table is free and exclusive to Fairfaxians.
If you live with your window facing the garden you can shout to your friends.
You can get away with having BBQs and fireworks cos there is no security.
It's close to town.

Bad:
My room burned down last year (which you'll probably hear about). It's room 149 so whoever gets it will have really nice new furniture cos all mine got completely charred!
There was an arsonist on a seperate occasion who deliberately set fire to one of the kitchens.
There was a rat that lived outside my room.
The kitchens are horrible in that you have to share between looooooads of people and they get all gooey and we had maggots last year.
The showers/toilets aren't great.
the breakfast is crap - it's just cerial and a bit of toast, fruit and horrible yoghurt.

That about sums it up. There are always lots of Fairfax socials to go to, which is great. Just pleeeeease don't light candles - your room WILL burn down! No, seriously, it has made a BIG hole in my finances - be safe.

If anyone has any questions don't hesitate to ask and I'll try and get back to you. Oh and we've all left a little surprise for all you new Freshers - if you're clever you'll find it!

Ewwww! That's just not nice! But the surprise sounds intriguing...

Hiya I'm also in Fairfax House, Room FX/112 wherever that might be!

Am slightly concerned about what the information booklet and Sallykins say - does anyone know how many people share a toilet/ shower/ kitchen? One per floor WOULD be a little crowded! I don't mind sharing just trying to prepare myself for the reality of living there! :p:
