So this comes up a lot but why not have another thread since it's been awhile?

Who would you pick as the best and worst? Ideally have you reasons why as well.

For me the best would be LBJ. His Great Society programs really made a difference in the US and really threw America forward quite a lot. His handling of the Vietnam war was terrible however as was the way in which he refused to run for president then at the last minute started leaning toward running anyway.

I'm not too sure on worst as most presidents, even Nixon, have some quite reasonable redeeming features and policies. I'd be tempted to say Herbert Hoover for his mishandling of the Wall Street Crash but then he was just out of his depth. FDR always gets me slightly as well but that was in his last few years and how he was manipulated by Stalin.

Anyway, thoughts?

I think the worst is obviously Barack Obama.

However the worst is much more difficult.

None of the US Presidents were ideal, but there are very few people who are perfect in any case. Every President since 1945 is a war criminal, in any case.

I'd say that Franklin D Roosevelt - for his relatively successful socialist economic policies and diplomatic attitude towards Stalin - and Teddy Roosevelt - for his protection of America's national parks and forests - were probably the best. Eisenhower wasn't bad for a Republican either, and did some great work on the highways, although he of course presided over the criminal coups of the democratically elected government in Iran in 1953, and the democratically elected socialist government in Guatemala in 1954. Obama is 'meh' - he's done some good work with the environment and healthcare, but he's been a disappointment overall, although to be fair, he does have a massively hostile Congress who set out from the start to block his initiatives. Still, was he forced by Congress into his drone strike campaign, or his continuation of the US's longstanding Israel-Palestine policy? I think not.

The worst probably goes to either Ronald Reagan or George W. Bush. Reagan's support of capitalist massacres and death squads in Latin America was just atrocious, as was his funding of terrorists in Nicaragua. He also brought about the current neoliberal capitalist agenda, which has increased inequality. Aside from that, he used to see an astrologer for advice, which is always a 'bad sign'. Bush, however, probably thought he was talking to God a lot, and such an entity probably pushed him to instigate the illegal aggression against Iraq in 2003. He also presided over the financial crisis of 2007-08, which was due to his deregulatory capitalist policies, and the utilisation of private militias in wars.

Hoover was certainly economically inept, but it was also his predecessors - Harding, Coolidge, etc, who brought in many of the capitalist economic policies which led to the Great Depression, so he doesn't get the full blame for it.

obama is a murderer
Nothing more to add than that? Every president has ordered the deaths of someone. Nothing obama has done is out of the ordinary.

Wilson was an idealistic idiot, and a staunch racist as well.

Andrew Johnson completely ****ed up reconstruction.

Harding was filthy like Kennedy and Clinton, but unlike them he had no redeeming features.

The 2 Roosevelts were alright, and I think Truman did well.

Guys, not all the best and the worst happens in our lifetime! smh

The best for me was Abraham Lincoln, freed the slaves (for whatever reason, don't care).

The worst was either GW Bush (****ed up everything big time), or the guys who purposefully swindled the Indians out of their lands and led to the Trail of Tears (don't know the names)

Wikipedia has a nice page where it analyses best and worst US president rankings according to historians, liberals, conservatives etc

Best - Clinton - Despite being mired by the Republicans having control of the House and Senate he managed to make a number of social initiatives and more importantly presided over a period of high growth and movement to a fiscal surplus.

Worst - Eisenhower - Suez!
