Does anyone know how the whole receiving mail/packages thing goes at York? Specifically Alcuin College? I need to order some home type stuff from Argos (ie pots and pans) and was wondering 1) how I'll know my package has arrived and 2) how far I have to lug the stuff after I pick it up. Any additional info would be good. Thanks!

There's some information about this in the residents' handbook, if you've received it. I would go and see what it says, but it's not to hand at the moment. I think there's basically a place where mail is stored and you have to go down and collect it within a certain time period, but I could be way off...

I'm no dirty Alcuin-er, but...

http://www.york.ac.uk/univ/coll/alcuin/general.htm

'The majority of Post Office mail is delivered direct to the postboxes outside the accommodation blocks and a key is issued to you to check the contents of the relevant postbox. This direct delivery is dependent upon the use of the accurate postcode address on display in every flat. Other incomingmail is put in the pigeon-holes opposite the Porter’s Desk in Reception. Students should check these frequently. Registered or Special Delivery mail is kept in Reception, and a display board indicates mail awaiting collection.'

Hope that helps.

A ha! Fantastic! Thanks!

No worries. Langwith was rather different, there was only one mail room with a key card for letters and all packages were kept behind the porters' lodge.
Yeah it'll go to the porters, I've had many a parcel delivered without problems.

How far is that from Alcuin?

The following (apparently) is true only for James, Halifax and Alcuin residents.

What I gathered from my mail escapades in York this past year was that if you specify which room, flat and block you are in and give the correct postcode for that building, you will receive your mail in your block postbox, or if it's a parcel they will ring the doorbell and deliver it to you (or anyone else in your flat who claims to be you).

If you do not specify the above and simply specify your college, it will be delivered to your college porter's lodge. Regular mail will go into the mail room which all your collegemates have access to, registered mail and parcels will be kept by the porters and will only be handed over to you since they require ID to do so.

It is generally safer to have registered mail and parcels delivered to the porter's lodge and regular mail to your block, for obvious reasons.

Each college has its own porters lodge. The Alcuin one is in D block next to the bar, the Derwent one is next to the bar, the Vanbrugh one is near the bar... Might be spotting a trend here.

Only applies for James and parts of Halifax, everywhere else it goes to the porters regardless.

It's true for Alcuin too.
I was kind of thinking that but I wasn't really sure, never have known that much about alcuin.

It's all tucked away in a corner - it's easy to overlook...
Exactly, I've never been there!

bah, i'm disappointed, Iain!

I don't know why you changed your post back, its still only those 3 colleges where there is the possibility of getting post to your flat/house, everywhere else it goes porter-wise.

There!

So, in Alcuin does it go to the porters or to your flat if you give a specific address?
