Compound A, C4H8O3, can lose water to form either:
Compound B, a cyclic ester
Compound C, a polyester.
Identify compounds A, B and C.
I have the mark scheme, but was wondering how you would get to the answers?
Compound A could be HOCH2CH2CH2COOH
To form an ester the OH and COOH react by eliminating water to form an ester bond -O-CO-
This can be done either by the molecule reacting with itself (the OH of one end reacting with the COOH of the other end) this produces the cyclic ester or the OH of one molecule reacts with the COOH of another and so on. This produces the polyester.
I know they must both contain a benzene ring, but how do you know which functional groups to use and where to put them?
