What are the music rooms like at Durham? I'm a pianist, albeit not concert level, but I do like to play a lot. Is there somewhere for anyone to practice?
in grey college at least, I hear there are practice rooms, one of which has a baby grand. I am a pianist and I was thinking of doing music at uni, so it's really important to me that I can keep it up. Are there any oppourtunities to practice on good instruments once in a while, even if you don't study music?
There is a music room in most colleges I think....
There is a music room in Hatfield which although not very well soundproofed is better than the Aidan's one which is in or near to the ghetto that is A Extension and right next to someone's room!!
So therefore, on music rooms, Hatfield is better than Aidans.
Does anyone know if there are guitar amps in these music rooms? I would bring mine but it weighs a tonne and won't fit in the car. And I gave my practice amp away.

Oh crap lol. I'm in st aidan's. Oh well I'll just have to disturb someone then lool That's made me quite happy actually!

There is in Hatfield's music room, so make a friend from Hatfield and you can sneak in and use it.
Goldenratio if you're really concerned about soundproofing (which I can see you're not ) follow the advice I've given to ssmoose.
Also, there's nothing wrong with musicians from Aidan's. (My boyfriend was one.)

Dude - the music room at Mildert has amps and a grand piano.
Not really - you have to get used to Durham not being into that style of music. It's either cheese (someone playing a CD of crap all night) or live music with guitars, drums, etc.
Very few people are into trance/house or anything that involves skill mixing one record into the next. In fact, there is only ONE night (each week) that has something close to it, and that's Planet of Sound at the Student Union each week - which is half decent music (for Durham!) but the mixing is awful!!! One track ends and the other starts, haha!
If you want good house music, you can go to Newcastle though and go to a club called Digital on a Saturday night for "Shindig" - a big house music night in an awesome club!

I live in Newcastle, but unfortunately have never been to Digital - I hate myself for it!!!
But I've been to Shindig, as it used to be at another club (Foundation) which I used to go to all the time (though mostly went to a night called Promise - more trance than house). But then Digital opened and it was all spanking new so Shindig moved over there.
However I've heard amazing things about Digital - awesome sound system and lighting, great club, good atmosphere, etc etc. It's quite expensive but there really isn't much of a trance/house scene in the North East anymore, unfortunately!
You will find a few people who like house music, they DO exist, but not quite enough demand for a trance/house night! But I know I'll certainly be going to Digital sometime in the first term...hopefully!

Well no, you have to understand that at Durham you'll realise that clubbing in Durham IS crap...but you make such amazing friends at Durham that going out to a club is not about the music or even the alcohol, but just having an awesome night with your mates.
Some of the best nights out I've ever had have been in Durham, despite the awful music, because I just have a laugh with my closest friends. Have some drinks, dance to crap music, sing along to cheesy anthems, and walk back to college laughing with your mates - perfect night!
