Toenail Coming off.

Hi everyone

A couple of months ago I bought some shoes from Matalan for a new job I was starting. I'm a size 5/6 however the size 6 was far too big and the size 4 was far too small. The size 5 was a little big but I thought once I put some heel grips in they should be fine.

So I got them home, put some heel grips in them and tried them on. They were still a bit big so I put some insoles in them. Again, they still kept slipping off every time I walked along. I was due to start this new job the following day and there were no other places open for me to buy any other shoes. So I decided to put some cotton wool balls in the back of the shoe to make my foot fit a bit better. That seemed to do the job.

I went into work and after about 5/10 mins of walking around they started to kill. I walked around for about 1-2 hours at the most that day and not all at once. I sat down for quite a bit inbetween and I took my shoes off then. After a week or so I noticed that 2 of my toenails had gone black underneath, basically bruised. It was the nails next to the big toe on each foot.

Over the past 2 weeks, I have noticed they have been starting to come away from the skin. I know they're gonna come off soon but am really worried about it. Has this happened to anyone else before, if so what can I do? I will have to wear open toed shoes in my new job now to let the air get to it but I am scared of it hurting when it comes away and stuff. I know the skin will be sensitive underneath.

I'm not happy with Matalan but apparantly I won't be able to get any compensation for it cos I "altered" the shoes by putting in heel grips.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks.

Talk to your doctor.

I'm a doctor.

The only cure is amputation.

Then I'm afraid OP, you will have to have your foot amputated.

Worst case scenario: the leg comes off up to the thigh.

I think it would be safer to amputate both legs.

ah that happened to mine after I walked for 32km in Scotland; I just left it and eventually it came off but a new nail had grown underneath. Yours'll be fine

isn't it similar to when you accidently trap your fingernail in the door and it goes black, dies and drops off but almost at the same time a new one grows?

I think this sort of situation is why we need to advance cloning technology as soon as possible.

Just imagine, you could have your bad toenail surgically removed and a new toenail cultured from your own DNA grafted on.

Thing of how attractive feet would be. We would be living in a utopia.

Lol, ok guys cut the girl some slack! Seriously, don't worry - I've lost three nails on my left foot and one on my right, coz of the running I do. Occupational hazard, I just pulled the buggers off once they started to come loose, no biggy - it doesn't hurt, as long as they've actually started coming away. You just trim them real tight to the skin first, then pull away whatever's left. I've no idea why it happens so often, but I've been losing nails and growing them back for years, used to happen all the time when I took ballet. They just grow back, eventually
