Dreaming that you hit the ground!

You know people say that whilst lots of people dream of falling, nobody dreams of actually hitting the ground, because if you do, you die in real life? Well, I would be interested to know people's opinions of this, ie. whether they think it is true or not and if so, why.
Basically, a few nights ago I dreamed that I and a few family members were skiing down a steep slope, when it started to get steeper and steeper, and I realised there was an avelanche happening. I saw a giant snowball and lots of smaller pieces of ice and snow tumbling down, and then the slope grew so steep it was going straight down and we were now just freefalling. I grew apprehensive, hoping the slope would reappear, and then I looked down and saw the roofs of some houses, and realised that we were going to hit the ground in a few seconds! I began saying things like 'I love you' to the group in general, and tried to steel myself up for hitting the ground. Then I did hit the ground, and eveything went black as I lost conciousness in the dream. Gradually I became aware that I was still alive, though everything was still black; I thought to myself "well, that didn't hurt as much as I though it would" and "I wonder how many bones I have broken" - I imagined what I must look like to passers-by, all spread out of the ground.
At that point I woke up, but for a few seconds while I was still disorientated, I wondered if I had actually died and that although I could see my room through the darkness, I might be in some alternate existance! It made me freak out a little to be honest, especially when I realised that I had been lying flat on my back with my hands crossed over my chest, in the style of a corpse in a coffin!
Has anyone else ever dreamed of actually hitting the ground?

If people die when they hit the ground, how do people know that they were dreaming about falling?

The only time I've ever woken up from a dream in cold sweat is when I was about to hit the ground after a slow motion plunge off a cliff.

I don't know what would've happened, but I doubt death. I mean, think about it, I dream of being a superhero quite a lot, and if you hit the ground while you were invulnerable then you'd be fine, so I doubt anything would happen.

Yeah I see the logic there  I don't believe it, because otherwise obviously I would be dead and wouldn't be here now, but before my dream I was in two minds about it - I thought there was a possibility it might be true. Maybe it is in some cases (maybe people with heart conditions?)

Again, even if they did die because of heart disease, how would you know they were dreaming about falling?

I suppose you would never know. Just a theory I thought of - the shock of hitting the ground in the dream triggering a heart attack or something.
Anyway, glad to know I'm not the only person who has dreamed of it - I'd never heard of anyone dreaming of that before.

The falling feeling is something everyone experiences, its a survival instinct from when we used to sleep in trees or something. Its meant to make us wake up and grab onto something. It was on QI.

Yeah I know everyone dreams of falling - it was people dreaming of hitting the ground and staying asleep afterwards, ie. not waking up as soon as they hit the ground, that I wondered about.

I once dreamed that I died from a nuclear explosion. Everything was black and I was like 'Shouldn't I be dead?' then eventually I realised it was a dream. Very relieved but still pretty shook up from it all.

so far ive been vapourised in 6 seperate nuclear explosions, three times been executed by hijackers armed with a 9mm, twice been killed trying to break into a russian army base, and once been blown away by a shotgun.

im pretty sure ive survived every time  lol, how would anyone actually know that if you dream you die then you die in real life - how did they collect their research?

Obviously I don't believe that! I was just saying that some people do, though I don't personally!
I once dreamed that I was a spirit which had come out of my body and was looking at my body lying on my bed. When I got back from a journey outside, I hovered in front of my mouth, trying to get back into my body, but then my forehead itched, I scratched it, and then I knew that since I had broken my concentration, I could no longer get back into my body. Now that was weird.

:p: I get that you don't believe it..just find it very very amusing that some people actually do. Dreams really are bizarre and disturbingly our mind is the thing creating them so our minds must be fairly bizarre too.

I know I have these dreams a lot too!!

They're strange aren't they? Yay I'm not the only one :p:
