2 uni teething problems

I hope this is nothing severe but i'm just wondering if I can asksome advice on something...

OK, i'm at Cardiff, which is said to have the best union bar, and the trouble is I CAN'T ****IN' STAND IT! OK i have a disability which makes me wobbly on my feet and slightly harder to understand, and when I go there it's so packed that it takes me 5 minutes to walk 2 metres and i'm constantly being knocked over, and talking's just a joke. If i'm lucky after 5 minutes of saying 'TED' someone will eventually find out my name after asking me - but there is no way l could hold a propper conversation in that environment. So, i don't know what to do because come 11pm everyone is there, so it's almost a choice of go and be lonely or not go and be lonely. Any advice?

Other problem, there's a bar in my residential complex and the bar manager keeps on trying to get me to spend time with him and he doesn't take no as an answer. I'm just about to go there to watch the footie in the comfort that there's a roast dinner, but i'm not into football. He's also insistant that I join him to go and see cardiff city next saturday and there's nothing l want to do less, and i've tried saying no but it doesn't work! HELP

I know what you mean about not liking the student union, ours is ok, but not nearly quiet enough to socilise. The best thing that you can probably do is just try and get their earlier so in order to be able to have the time to speak properly and be able to hear other people aswell.

The trouble your having with the man, i think you should take up his offer, although you don't like football etc, through him you might meet other people. Sound like an agony aunt lol (aughh!!!)

I don't think disliking the union bar is unique, me and a few of my flatmates went last night and left after one drink because it was ridiculous, we couldn't hear anything and could hardly move and we ended up watching S4C on the projection screen because trying to hold a conversation was pointless. We went back to the flat and got drunk there and had more fun (apart from when I sliced my thumb open while separating frozen burgers, but that's just an important lesson about trying to cook when wasted).

I feel like Freshers Week basically seems to be about clubbing and getting very drunk every night and generally acting like a bit of a prat, and that's not really my thing either. There's the Societies Fayre next week so I reckon joining a bunch of societies and getting involved with stuff is gunna be more fun than wearing your lungs out yelling in the union bar. Failing that, you could always say to your flatmates that maybe you should try finding another bar to hang out in, one that's a bit quieter.

If this guy won't take no for an answer, say you have other plans (seeing friends, parents visiting, whatever). That's the only thing I can think of right now, sorry.

Yes, l'm really looking forward to the fayre... Gives me a chance to show people a better impression of me than some lost-looking disabled guy stumbling around a bar. Shame, I would have much prefered seeing Joe Bonamassa tonight... He was at the city hall:frown:

It's freshers week at the moment, so everything is going to be packed. In a few weeks things will quieten down because people will stop going out every night. I've been to union nights where it's been practically empty. Try getting there early too before everyone else does. I know it's probably hard at the moment, I was at the Taf last night and it was packed! But things should get better soon.

Can I ask... what's wrong with you? My Uncle has severe cerebal palsy and he is exactly the same. (With the stumbling and not having clear speech)

People are right, once fresher's week is over things will quieten down a bit. Are there any other bars on campus that you could go to, that might be a bit quieter?
Join some societies and try to meet people with common interests, then you have a way of socialising outside of the su.
Hope it works out for you.

I have CP to, and I sound quite similar to your uncle  Though in comparison to others i've seen I would only call it moderate -some can't walk and talk at all!
