Wheels, Rims, Trims, Alloys??

Hi

Ive just recently got myself a mk4 golf and Im considering doing something to the wheels of the car but sightly confused so I wanted to ask some questions.

Are rims and alloys the same thing?

How can I find out the tyre size of my car?

If I do buy rims how easy is it to transfer my old tyres and would they fit?

Wudnt it be much cheaper to just get trims and what wud be the difference between them and rims appearence wise?

Thanks alot!

Rims and alloys are the same thing, yes. "Rim" is a slang name used for alloy wheels.

What car have you got? Although it would be easier to go upto the tyre and read the tyre size.....

Very easy to fit them and they will fit providing you get the right offset and stud pattern.

Trims = ****, can fall off, have bad designs and just look tacky.

PS, don't stick big alloys on if you're not guna lower it.

look at the side wall. You'll see, e.g:

205/50/17

For this tyre size the width of the tyre is 205mm. The profile (height of tyre) is 50% of the tyre width, 17 refers to the wheel size in inches.

Thanks alot for your help.

When you say it is very easy to transfer the tyre, will I need any equipment and can it be done by yourself.

Should I not get trims as a cheap alternative till I can afford rims?

Thanks again.

well they wont fit, becasue the mk4 as standard were 15", and to upgrade your wheels to something decent looking, with the arch size of the golf, 17" is minimum!

Your best bet is to sell the old Steel rims and tyres together once you have got your new alloys.

The chances of the tyres on your current steels fitting on any new set of alloys is next to nil.
How much money have you got to play with btw?

What model is your golf? 1.4E 1.6SE etc.

Buying plastic wheel trims is a waste of money - alloys look better but depending on if you want second hand (can get some nice Montreal IIs for Β£200) or brand new (very nice BBS set for Β£1k), you may end up spending a lot

I would suggest Montreal IIs (16 inch) - these are the alloys on the gti turbos so look like they are standard and don't look chavvy - should be able to get them from ebay but then you have the usual risks of buying from ebay.

Its up to you, but for Β£300 you will only get 2nd hand alloys which already have a few scrapes and marks, and will probably need new tyres soon. If I was you, I would just keep the wheel trims it has (if it has)

Also, look on uk-mkivs.net website for help too.
