The standard full time Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) takes a year if you are studying full-time however some universities have a part-time option which takes two years. If you wanted to be a solicitor you would need to study the Legal Practice Course (LPC) after studying the GDL - this is also a year.

I studied the GDL last year at the University of Law: http://www.law.ac.uk/postgraduate/gdl/
And I am currently studying the LPC there too: http://www.law.ac.uk/postgraduate/lpc/

Hope that helps

The new GDL of BPP by the way is 2 terms September to April for the first time ever this year (befoer this Autumn it was the full year September to the summer). the University of Law remains 3 terms.

You then do the LPC (under the current system) for the year after. Then 2 years as a trainee solicitor if you can find a firm which will take you on. Smaller firms out of London may well take someone on with a 2/2. Bigger firms in London will require a 2/1 and high A level grades and much else.

On LPC cost with BPP this is the cost although you can get a masters student loan for some of the cost if you do a dissertation/extra work on the LPC I think. You can also do an accelerated LPC over 7 months with BPP but that is very hard work and you may not have a day off for 6 months.

LPC costs with BPP:

Location Course Cost
Birmingham £13,130
Bristol £13,130
Cambridge £13,130
Leeds £12,290
London Holborn £16,690
Manchester £12,290
