Although this was not a history module, we read the books 1984 and the Handmaids Tale, which had an historical background. Recommend both books.

I did like learning about British/Russian foreign policy a lot during A-Level but I equally loved the Divided Union and Nazi Germany stuff I did at GCSE. The civil rights stuff was great. I just had a knack for remembering dates and names etc easily as well so I used to do well in the tests, which made me like it even more of course :p:

Ah yes the Annual General Meeting, the last one I went to was for my Young Enterprise company!

Well what happened to your company now? Still running?
I have never got round to reading 1984... I used to read a book a week, but since yr 11 I just havent had the time to do so. Now its like a book every few months :frown: I love reading as well. Hopefully this year I can get back in to it

Never heard of the other one.

We had to bow down to the tyranny of the Young Enterprise organisation and disband!:p:

Yeah we did the cold war at GCSE as well in a unit called Superpower Rivalry. It was a wicked unit as well I really loved it. Heck I love all history  The main foreign policy stuff I did for British A-level was comparing Castlereagh and Canning (and they chose such a bizarre time period most people have no clue what I am talking about when I mention those names :p: ) But then I also did a bit on Gladstone's and Disraeli's f.policy...

That's what we did that was my favourite aspect of history!....Without looking stupid isn't that from the 1800s?? Late 19th century foreign policy is so much more interesting particularly from 1870s onwards. Did you study post 1914 history as well?
1984 forever!! (the book that is :p: ) i loved it to bits! Read it in one night flat cause it was so gripping!

hahaha. It really is a great book.

By the way, is anyone having difficulty with reading Malinowski and Hart? I've just read half of Malinowski's extract, and the language, vocabulary, and the general structure of the language is difficult. I don't think I'm going to be able to read Hart's extract today as well.

1984 is one of the best books ever. Demolishes Brave New World if you ask me (though the latter is still very good).

I'm having mucho difficulty in reading Malinowski - as in, mucho difficulty staying awake...

Seriously I got half way through and had to give up. Haven't even attempted Hart...

You're not the only one. I spent 3 hours reading that Malinowski extract and still having problems understanding it! In the end I gave up and went to chat on MSN instead.
No lawyers in the library today? Awwww.......

I've read Malinowski, and it is fairly straightr forward after you get to the middle, but Hart looks much more complicated.

I tihnk I will be spending all of this evening, just to read that useless extract.

By the way, I'm sure Mr Roberts is a very nice man, (I mean, someone who speaks like that cannot be evil lol) but his lectures are so boring and tedious.

Nah don't bother, plenty of time to get bogged down reading. :p: Think I'm going to head down to vodka island tonight. £1.95 for a double vodka red bull

Where/what is Vodka Island? I saw a photo album on someone's Facebook about their night at Vodka Island and it looked pretty good lol.

Student night every Monday at On Anon in Piccadilly Circus. It's normally well expensive but they do some drinks dirt cheap on Mondays (by some drinks I mean pretty much only vodka red bull )

It's quite a good club - went there last week and it was crawling with UCL students though. :p:

At that sounds pretty good, I like Vodka Red Bull anyway so that wouldn't be too much of a chore :p: Is the vodka decent though? Because I remember being in Cheapskates (or whatever its called these days), and although it was £1 for a vodka+mixer, the "vodka" was just paint stripper in a vodka bottle

Yeah know what you mean - we went to Cheapskates on the first Monday and the vodka was rough. It's def better at Vodka Island...which is a good thing, seeing as normally they charge about £6 for a double vodka+mixer.

Thank God for student nights...
