Misunderstanding race

You abviously have self esteem issues. You're not white so deal with it!! It seems to me that if people took you for someone who was Polish, you wouldnt even have started this thread. There is nothing wrong with being Arab or Indian or BLACK! You're upset because people dont think you're European and thats more than a little pathetic. I'm black and I'm very proud of it. Irrespective of the general stereotype that exists about black people, I'm not going to change who I am or worry for one second that people will think less of me because of the colour of my skin so suck it up and grow up!!

Im mixed race but because im light and have dead straight hair i get mistaken for being asian i dont see it as a problem unless they start talking to me in diffrent language, My 4 brothers all mixed race but have curly to west indian hair and slight darker then me, yet my niece both parents mixed race both lil darker then me and if she didnt have the booty she could pass for being white yet her sister is dark (same mom and dad) guess it just how you come out lol

I'm from Portugal so therefore have slightly darker skin and people always make it into a big thing even though the majority of my skin is as light as theirs now (I've been in England for 12 years), it's just parts that are exposed to the sun a lot that are darker: face, arms, hands etc it bugs me though when people mention it, mainly because of how badly I was picked on at school, one time this black kid called me a paki!

I didn't mean any offence - which I should have said in the first post, I know. I know I'm quite obviously foreign and not white!!!! And I said nothing bad about anyone who was arab or indian or black - when I researched my family tree there was a black person and 2 arab people in there so I'm not about to be offensive! You should read properly, I made no offensive comments towards anyone else. I have looked in a mirror - I just get upset when people say things to me but not to my brother or my parents. I'm always the one that gets singled out and it's not just easy to always shrug it off.

I've been called packi quite often too. It's probably one of the worse things they say.

And while I'm here, I might as well say, when did I ever say I'm not European? I'm Greek (to answer a few questions)
I'm chinese and fair skinned but someone called me an indian today. !!!!!!!! some people dont really know once race from the other (its white vesus the rest of the world).
I'm a white European (but with black hair) and people still called me a paki at school. I'm not claiming that its ok to call Asian people pakis I just wish that people who are ignorant enough to hurl racist names at someone could at least try to be accurate.

It's mostly ignorance. People who aren't a particular race (much like someone who isn't interested in certain subjects) just won't go into, and therefore have knowledge or experience of the area. For example, a hairdresser will never need or want to learn about computers in their lives. If theirs is broke, call a technician. Simple.

The only problem with this is, unlike occupations and interests, race will be (and already is) a part of all our lives, the moment we see a person of another race. That's why stereotypes are so ingrained into our heads - it's all we've heard of a race before, and sadly as humans, we have no interest in naturally learning about them further, so ignorance will continue to reign.
Some people are just ignorant. I wouldn't let them look down on you, you should look down on them if anything. I'm white and all my family have come from Britain but I do get irritated sometimes by people's ignorance when it comes to race. You have to be careful not to mistake ignorance for someone being rascist though.

Unfortunatly there are always going to be some white people who consider anyone with slightly darker to very much darker skin as pakis. One of my housemates once commented on how disgusting my "paki" food was when I was eating a chinese take away. I was much confused.

Has anyone else encountered this?

I've been in situations which mirror yours exactly.
I'm half greek, however have the skin tone of a 100% greek, quite dark, parents split up and live with my mother and step-father, who are both blonde and white.

It started off being a bit hurtful I guess, but just tell em once what your decent is and then just laugh it off, people don't mean any harm by it.

Embrace the fact you stand out from the rest of the crowd
Yeah I agree and completely understand, I get that too.

To OP: why anon?? Lately I have discovered it's just way better to come out with everything and be totally honest, and I consider myself a better person for it.

Reveal thyself! There are many people in your situation.

Anyway, yep. I get this soo much, I even started a thread about this in General Discussion the other week  So I won't repeat what I said there, but all I'll say is this. Here in Australia it's about 95% white, in ACT it's close to 98%, and even I get mistaken for being black when I'm actually only about 1/2 Asian really (both parents are mixed race).

It's so annoying because I consider myself Australian!

But y/day I went on this Aussie forum and the members were quite rude to me and I prefer TSR now  x x

People don't like being mistaken for being something they're not. There's nothing wrong with that.
