As the question in the title

How do I 'know' if there are these pathogens in the surrounding envrionment?

How can I tell if someone is infected with a contagious disease?

How can I block these pathogens from affecting me (apart from having good immune function)?

You could try avoiding all human contact for the rest of your life? Though even then a physical insult could be seized upon by your own bacteria or that in the environment.

There's evidence that avoiding infection is not a good thing though. At least whilst you are a child - excessive hygiene is linked to autoimmune disease.
