Hi,

A family member who works in the public sector was given a special leave, does this mean that they have one less annual leave day?

Like how does the special leave work?

Thanks

No. They are separate from your annual leave.

Thanks for your response

Is there a limit as to how many special leaves you can take off? In what cases can it be used?

It might be different for each organisation but for mine there's a maximum of 5 paid special leave, However you can be granted more but they will have to be taken as unpaid unless the fall into the following.

1. for compassionate reasons, in the event of a death, serious injury or illness of a dependent or partner/spouse, child, parent, brother or sister who is not a dependent;

2. to deal with a sudden or unforeseen emergency situation involving children or other dependants

3. to attend a funeral or memorial service for other members of the employee’s family or for a close friend.

4.to deal with a domestic emergency, for example, in the case of damage to the home due to fire, flood or burglary
where the employee is required

5.to undertake a course of treatment in relation to their health by their GP or specialist

Your family friend should have been provided with a Civil Servant hand book Etc they usually outline these things there. Or check the main website. Hope this helps.
