I'm going to assume you're a geography student doing rivers? Ranging poles are used for measuring velocity (you put them a set distance apart down the river and measure the time it takes for a float to get from one to the other), you can used them for measuring width, although it's possible to do it without, same with depth, it's easier to rest the metre stick next to the pole to give a more reliable reading and the wetted perimeter.

They're also really useful to stop you falling face first into the river when you go on fields trips.
