Since 6.2 - 7.2 = -1, -1 * 3.4 = -3.4,, so the answer to a plus -3.4 is the answer and that is how you would use a. Or at least I think it is.

7.2 x 3.4
6.2 x 3.4

I take it you can see that the only difference is between the 6 and 7.

So the constant is 3.4 (or the number which is the same is 3.4) therefore if you take away 3.4 from you first answer then you'll get the second.

To explain it another way
7 x 3 = 21
6 x 3 = 18
21-3= 18

Thanks, you explained it well, I always overcomplicate things, I can see it's really simple now.
I'm glad I helped, I often do the same

just me but i think the easyest way would be get rid of the decimals first by multiplying both numbers by 10
6.2 x 10 = 62___________3.4 x 10 = 34
then multiply them together
62 x 34 = 2108
then move the decimal point back again both times by
2108/10 = 210.8 and again 210.8/10 - 21.08
or simply 2108/100 = 21.08
