So I've tried this question where I have to find the roots of the equation shown in the picture, but for some reason I have gotten the answer wrong, as it's supposed to be instead of . Can anyone give me hints as to where I went wrong? Thank you

you should have -48 in the discriminant, not -36

Wow, that reply was quick Oh okay, so my mistake was multiplying the unsimplified equation by 2 first as opposed to simplifying the equation first then multiplying by 2? thank you!

Edit: hang on, so it's nothing to do with the above?
