I'm doing biochemistry at nottingham and I'd say yes, it's pretty hard. however I don't know how it compares to a course at a worse Uni so can't really say

Ofcourse.

From an admissions tutor i spoke too - Uni entry requirements are used to pick students more capable to cope with the level of difficulty of that particular degree.

There's obviously going to be a difference between say Oxford and Sheffield. There won't be as much difference (if at all) between Sheffield and Birmingham.
