Hello, hope everyone enjoyed their half term week off! Back to school tomorrow for me and I need to write a formal letter to an editor of a newspaper about a smoking ban in my English. My teacher has told our class to prepare, and I have but the only thing that I am stuck is a way to begin my opening paragraph. She told us to find a way to say something different to "I'm writing to you..." but I don't have a clue what to write instead.

Please help.

Hi Beth,

I always get this problem! I'm often struggling with essay/letter starters which are unconventional, maybe you could start with something like:

I am approaching your newspaper to inform you on my own views/opinions on smoking and whether it should/should not be banned...

Hope this helps!
