Helenia
Autonomic nervous system. There is no concious processing going on in there

do you know where i can get some specifics on this somewhere?

I always thought all thinking initiated in the brain.

Reply 28

it does ..but superficially ..would you feel first..(heart) or would you think first..(mind)????

Reply 29

well do you mean the tension in your heart? it has to be 'sensed' (or felt) by the heart first (or by the nerves that Helenia talked bout), but in order to be 'felt' (i.e. the perception) the analysis and processing is by the brain.

Reply 30

ok then...take the topic of free-will...think or feel first?...heart or mind?

Reply 31

I really don't think he's talking about physical reactions, as the heart has no part that 'thinks'. I think he's talking about the difference between acting rationally, ie with your brain, or by impulse, with your heart.

Reply 32

but whether rational behaviour or impulse, both are initiated by the brain, just different regions

Reply 33

Exactly.

Im not particularly great at science, but isn't the heart a muscle with absolutely nothing to think with? So its a mind-mind dilemma, im afraid.

Reply 34

k...u got my point..
what do you mean when people say...dont think scientifically..(HEAD) ...go by what you u think is rite...go with what your heart says...(no physical thoughts at all...only mental)

Reply 35

I think they mean go with your instincts, but when this 'instinct' is thought about more carefully, rationality tells us not to trust your instincts.

Confucius lives!

Just weigh up the benefits of going with your heart against those if you go with your mind. Usually there are more benefits of going with your mind...

Reply 38

I'd go with the mind first, list pros and cons. Then I'd think how that would affect me emotionally/preferences.

1st example: I am expected to go into Finance because I love economics, am alright at it, and have decided to study it at uni. So everyone talks about my "fourth million" etc. Deep inside, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. Now I have decided to do a PGCE straight after my economics degree and go into teaching right away. This was a "heart" decision because this is what would truly make me happy, but also because my heart convinced my head that I don't need "the fourth million" for happiness. If my ambition was to progress financially and my greatest wish was to see the world and I loved teaching I wouldn't go into teaching, because I can't satisfy all of those. But since I know that my future earnings will be irrelevant to my happiness level I can forgo them to obtain that factor that will make me happier. I guess what I'm trying to say is that happiness is based on many factors and you need to consider all of them, this is where your mind helps.

Just like to mention that could also be a logical mind choice. Afterall you can only perform best when your most motivated. You'll only be adaquete if you study something that your good at but don't enjoy at all.

why is it that when ur in love your heart overpowers your mind and when you think about careers your mind functions more than the heart??
