A friend of mine is in his first year studying bioengineering at imperial college london. Four weeks after his fresher week, he complains that the course is not challenging and the level in maths and other courses and labs does not really go beyond high school (he did IB). I've heard that the 2nd year is very demanding (in engineering courses) at imperial. Is the 1st year so different? Is it meant to start easy to level out the different high school degrees? Or is the 1st term easy and they'll speed up after christmas? My friend is now involved in a few clubs which he really enjoys; they seem to make up for the disappointing coursework.

Are there any other 1st year students to confirm or contradict his impresssion?

I'd love to hear from students in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year how their 1st year went compared to the following years.
