Is social media damaging your mental health?

The Commons health select committee said the number of children referred to mental health services has risen by around one quarter in the last year, amid increasing pressures from social media, and the use of mobile phones to trade indecent photographs.

Their report on mental health services warns that children are being “bullied into a state of despair” on social media.

It also suggests that children’s emotional wellbeing may be damaged by every extra hour they spend on the computer.

... It cites evidence from Public Health England which states “Increased screen time and exposure to media is associated with reduced feelings of social acceptance, and increased feelings of loneliness, conduct problems and aggression.

“Certain internet activity (social network sites, multi-player online games) have been associated with lower levels of wellbeing.”

The report warns of a “dose-response” relationship where every extra hour spent on the computer “increases the likelihood of experiencing socio-emotional problems.”
If this is taken seriously, it could be the beginning of the end for social networking sites
Not necessarily. As with pretty much everything, it's only harmful if you use it too much and/or use it inappropriately.
