MAT & STEP for Imperial

I went on the website for Imperial and it said that if you're unable to sit MAT then they'll let you sit STEP. However, if you've sat MAT and feel like you haven't done as well, would you be allowed to sit STEP?

Think about it from Imperial's point of view: Shedloads more applicants than places. Therefore get them to sit an exam (MAT). If you don't score well in their preferred tiebreaker, why should they give a toss about how you perform in another test which they've chosen not to favour?

As confidently as the person above put it, he/she is wrong. I got a pretty average average mark on the MAT but they decided to give me an offer including step. I got the grades and got in. So yes, even if you messed up the mat (not too badly though) they could still give you another chance with step.
